On October 21, 2026, the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce hosted a forum where we heard from mayoral candidates who discussed their positions on a variety of topics specific to business and the local economy.

Each of the five candidates appearing on the 2026 local ballot for Mayor were invited to take part. Four joined us this evening.

The questions were derived from a variety of sources, including:
- Chamber of Commerce member businesses
- Sault Ste. Marie Real Estate Board
- Local business leaders and stakeholders

​The event was sponsored by the Sault Ste. Marie Real Estate Board and was held at Sault College

The City has invested significant public resources in economic development plans and other municipal strategies, but implementation does not always keep pace with commitments, funding or targets.

We asked candidates in Wards 1 through 5 what economic development outcomes residents and businesses should expect Council to deliver on during its next term, and would they support publicly reporting measurable results such as new investment, jobs, business growth and development activity.

A connected active transportation network can support tourism, transportation choice, neighbourhood connectivity and quality of life, while helping make Sault Ste. Marie more attractive to residents and employers.

City staff proposed an annual $711,000 investment to implement the Active Transportation Master Plan, but it was not included in the 2026 budget.

We asked candidates in Wards 1 through 5 if they would support a permanent annual investment of at least $750,000?
