The SSM city council meeting this Monday was a wild one! ποΈπ°β‘οΈ
Citizens concerned about the building of data centres in Sault Ste. Marie managed to put significant pressure on City Council.
π€ Councillors seemed trapped between a rock and a hard place as they tried to assure everyone that they would never approve plans for a big destructive megacentre while simultaneously standing firm that they did not want to pass a moratorium that would look unfriendly to prospective data centres.
However, what much of our community did not seem to notice were the "Defense" procurement items on the agenda.
βπΌ SSM4Palestine members attended in protest, the full long meeting and spoke up against making the Sault a national "defense" manufacturing hub, because we know - as the councillors said loud and clear - that our metal will be used to defend so-called western values here and abroad in Israel, and to maintain the status quo of white and colonial hegemony globally.
We may not have succeeded today, but we stood up for what is right in condeming these movements toward aggression, while our city chose once again to support terror and war, in the name of 'jobs'. πποΈπ§
