We have a BIG ask this Friday… Skip the bar tab—buy the forest a round instead!🌲💚

As we mentioned earlier, our memberships and donations have slowed down, and as a non-profit, we rely on these to keep our conservation work moving forward. Every dollar helps us maintain trails, protect sensitive habitats, create educational opportunities for our community, and more.

Please consider helping us out by investing in something that lasts longer than a hangover—the protection of our trails, forests, and wildlife.

Did you know that fox families are surprisingly devoted? 🦊

A mother fox, called a vixen, stays close to her kits while the father hunts and brings food back to the den.

From tracking species presence and seasonal movement to observing behaviours we might otherwise never witness, ecological monitoring plays an important role in guiding stewardship and conservation decisions at Algoma Highlands Conservancy.

What an incredible evening!

Last night, the Algoma Highlands Conservancy had a fantastic turnout at Sault College to welcome award-winning photographer and author Rudi Hargesheimer!

We were thrilled to have 58 people join us as Rudi shared behind-the-scenes stories and breathtaking photos during his presentation on Superior Trails, his beautiful new photo-tour book highlighting the best hiking routes around Lake Superior.

A major highlight of the night was hearing Rudi’s high praise for the Canadian side of the lake. With over half his book focused on our coastlines, he reminded us how lucky we are to have the lake's best views in our own backyard. 🇨🇦

The evening wrapped up with a fantastic Q&A session and a book signing. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to make this event such a huge success, and a massive thank you to Rudi for making the trip up to Sault Ste. Marie to inspire our next adventures!

There’s something special about experiencing Norm’s Cabin by water. ☀️🛶

This week, AHC volunteers were out on Bone Lake repairing and reinstalling the dock ahead of another summer season. Every board tightened and every section carried in helps prepare the cabin to welcome visitors back to this unique off-grid experience in the Algoma Highlands.

Tucked deep within the landscape Norm loved so much, the cabin continues a long tradition of quiet recreation, connection to nature, and stewardship. Soon, guests will once again enjoy the dock, hear loons across the lake, and settle into a place where things slow down.

Behind the scenes, it takes a community to keep places like this accessible and cared for. Huge thanks to the volunteers helping get everything ready for summer rentals starting soon. 🌲

AU graduate student and AHC volunteers have been busy installing acoustic recorders for a two-year study on bat activity along powerline corridors. 🦇

Acoustic recorders are specialized devices that capture ultrasonic sounds far above the range of human hearing. Because bats navigate and hunt using high-frequency echolocation calls, researchers can identify species and monitor activity levels by analyzing the unique sound patterns they leave behind.

The study will help improve our understanding of how bats use linear corridors and surrounding habitats throughout the Algoma Highlands.

The newly released Nature Strategy from Environment and Climate Change Canada highlights the importance of sustainable, long-term funding for conservation through Pillar 3 — recognizing that protecting nature for generations to come requires innovative and community-connected approaches.

At Algoma Highlands Conservancy, Norm’s Cabin is one example of how conservation and community connection can go hand in hand. More importantly, the cabin strengthens connections between people and the landscapes we work to protect. As Michaella McIntosh, Executive Director of AHC, shares:

“Norm’s Cabin demonstrates how land trusts can create conservation outcomes that are not isolated from community life, but strengthened by it. Through partnership, volunteer involvement, and public connection to place, the cabin helps people experience firsthand why these landscapes matter and why protecting them has lasting value.”

Experiences like these help people become immersed in the natural spaces around them, building a deeper understanding of why conservation matters — not just environmentally, but socially and culturally as well.

Thank you, Ontario Land Trust Alliance for sharing!

Over the last 3 days, our community has raised $750 for AHC’s General Fund.

We are incredibly grateful. Every donation, membership, share, and kind word reminds us that people care deeply about these lands.

And while $750 is a meaningful start, we are not done yet.

If each of our followers donated just $20, we would raise $40,000 for conservation, stewardship, education, trail care, insurance, habitat protection, and responsible public access across the Algoma Highlands.

It is a big number, but that is the power of community. Many hands make light work, and small contributions add up quickly when people come together.

If you have a little spare change kicking around, we invite you to consider putting it toward the lands, trails, wildlife, and places you love.

**Contributions over $20 quality for a tax receipt 😊

Algoma Highlands Conservancy anticipates operating in a deficit this year.

Like many land conservancies, we are rich in protected land, but cash poor. We rely heavily on community support and, over the last five months, we have received just 3 donations and 4 memberships. We know times are difficult for many people right now, and we believe in being transparent with our community.

Protected lands still require active stewardship. Trail maintenance, ecological monitoring, educational programming, insurance, signage, habitat protection, and responsible public access all require ongoing support to continue.

If you have ever hiked Robertson Cliffs, skied into Norm’s Cabin, snowshoed our trails, attended one of our events, or simply value knowing these landscapes remain protected for future generations, we ask you to consider becoming a member or making a donation.

For $30 per year, your membership directly supports conservation, education, research, and low-impact recreation throughout the Algoma Highlands.
