Here in this Toastmasters room, we have a unique opportunity to grow. Every time we deliver a speech, facilitate a meeting, or offer encouraging and constructive feedback to a fellow member, we are honing our leadership skills.
We are learning how to listen, mentor, guide, and support others in reaching their goals. By taking on meeting roles, we step outside our comfort zones and develop active listening, empathy, time management, organization, and team-building skills. Leadership is also about learning to guide others through our actions and through the giving and receiving of feedback.
This leadership journey embodies Toastmasters’ core values of integrity, respect, service, and excellence—values that help us achieve our common goals.
As Eleanor Roosevelt wisely said, “To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart.”
As you carry out your roles each Wednesday night, 7pm-8:30pm, City Hall, 99 Foster Drive, ask yourself: “Am I simply telling others what to do, or am I leading others so that we can grow together?”
