Today, we commemorate the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, which occurred on June 6th, 1944. This monumental event constituted the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The statistics associated with D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord, are awe-inspiring. The Allies utilized an armada of over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. The landings marked the beginning of a protracted and costly campaign in north-west Europe, which ultimately led the German high command to conclude that defeat was unavoidable. In the spring of 1944, the Allies were compelled to embark on the most complex military operation in history. The British, Americans, and Canadians launched a coordinated assault on five beaches along France's Normandy coast in the early hours of June 6th, 1944. On D-Day, 14,000 soldiers landed or parachuted into France. The Royal Canadian Navy made a significant contribution, deploying 110 warships and 10,000 sailors, while the RCAF provided 15 fighter and fighter-bomber squadrons. The Canadian casualties on D-Day totaled 1,074, including 359 fatalities.

The Branch is a proud recipient of funding from the Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club's Hound Power program.

The funds were raised through the team's Remembrance Day game, which featured auctioned special themed jerseys and complimentary tickets for 200 veterans and serving members.

The cheque was presented by Greyhounds President Tim Lukenda to Calvin King, 1st Vice-President, on June 3rd, and will be used to support Veterans services through the Poppy Trust Fund.
