Sanctum Care Group

Sanctum Care Group Sanctum is a newly-formed not-for-profit charitable organization that opened Saskatchewan’s first HIV Transitional Care Home and Hospice on November 3, 2015.

Sanctum’s mission is to provide care to people living with HIV/AIDS that is dignified, non-judgmental and unconditional. Saskatchewan has the highest rates of HIV in Canada, with the rate of HIV in our First Nations people equaling the rate of HIV in Nigeria. Reasons for Saskatchewan’s high rate of HIV are often related to the intersection of social, psychosocial and environmental factors such as

homelessness, addiction, poverty, mental illness and the sustained effects of colonization. Research indicates that 75% of people living with HIV who are homeless without support will die within 5 years. Sanctum is attempting to bridge the gaps in the current system by providing end-of-life care, transitional care, and respite care through a 10-bed facility that offers specialized supports and services geared to this population’s unique set of needs.

Dr. Morris Markentin is a Co-Founder of Sanctum Care Group, a board member, and someone who has participated in every single 36 Hour Challenge since its inception. Each time, he has slept outdoors. In 2025 alone, he did it twice, in both Prince Albert and here in Saskatoon.

His words say it best: Some people do this every day for years on end, and it isn't fair.

That conviction is what started Sanctum Care Group. And it is what keeps us going.

Dr. Rick Jaggi believes real change starts at the grassroots level. Not from the top down, but from communities coming together, showing up, and refusing to look away.

That is exactly what the Sanctum 36 Hour Challenge is all about.

As Day 1 of the Prince Albert 2025 36 Hour Challenge comes to a close, Danielle Carter pauses to take it all in. The emotions are real. The experience is humbling. And the reason behind every hour of this challenge is never far from mind.

Thank you to everyone who is part of this journey with us.

Dr. Rick Jaggi reflects on his sleeping arrangements for the evening in Saskatoon. That uncertainty, not knowing where you'll rest your head, or if your evening will be in a restful, safe place, is something no one should have to carry. It's what drives everything we do at Sanctum Care Group.

Every participant receives their sleeping plan for the night during the 2025 Sanctum 36 Hour Challenge in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

Some find themselves in shelter beds. Others are sleeping outside.

That uncertainty, that lack of control over something as basic as where you rest your head, is the reality for so many in our community every single night.

Carolyn Brost Strom reflects on navigating the unknowns of the 2025 Sanctum 36 Hour Challenge in Prince Albert. Nothing fully prepares you for what you will face.

Resilience carries you forward, but some moments still leave you feeling discouraged. That weight is real, and it is important to sit with it.

Because for many in our community, that discouragement is not temporary. It is every single day.

When someone reaches out to the Saskatoon Crisis Intervention Centre, they are calling at their absolute lowest point.

Knowing there is someone on the other end of that line ready to pick up means everything. We are so grateful for the organizations showing up for our community when it matters most. 💛

Cody Barnett came into the 36 Hour Challenge assuming resources were easy to access. What he found was something very different.

Roadblocks at every turn. The reality for so many vulnerable people in our community is that help exists, but getting to it is anything but simple.
