Today we mark the 82nd anniversary of D-DAY — June 6, 1944 — when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in the largest seaborne invasion in history.

For Canada, the landing at Juno Beach was only the beginning. The fighting that followed — house to house, village to village — demanded extraordinary courage and sacrifice from Canadian soldiers.

We're open today, and there's no better time to visit. Come see our incredible 21-foot scale model that brings this brutal, heroic campaign to life in remarkable detail.

Exciting News for the Saskatoon Museum of Military Artifacts!

We are delighted to announce that we have received funding support from Veterans Affairs Canada, Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, and the Museums Association of Saskatchewan through its Micro Grant Program to help launch the refurbishment of our RCAF exhibit.

These grants mark an important first step in transforming our gallery into a more engaging and immersive space that will share the stories of Saskatchewan and Indigenous men and women who served in Canada's Air Force. Through our upcoming "Sky Stories" project, visitors will explore remarkable stories of service, sacrifice, innovation, and courage while experiencing new displays, improved interpretation, and enhanced interactive elements.

We extend our sincere thanks to Veterans Affairs Canada, Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority and the Museums Association of Saskatchewan for their confidence in our vision and their commitment to preserving and sharing Canada's military heritage.

This is just the beginning, and we look forward to sharing updates as the project takes flight over the coming months.

Piece by piece, history takes flight again.

Our volunteer Jean Arsenult has recently completed the refurbishment of this beautiful Spitfire model at the Saskatoon Museum of Military Artifacts.

The Supermarine Spitfire became one of the most recognizable aircraft of the Second World War, admired for both its performance and elegant design. Thanks to the patience and dedication of volunteers like Jean, stories connected to these aircraft continue to be shared with new generations.

We’re incredibly grateful for the time, care and craftsmanship that went into this restoration.

What do you think of the finished result?

Just a reminder that the museum will be closed Saturday, May 16th for Victoria Day weekend. We'll be back open on our regular schedule after the long weekend.

While you're enjoying the extra day off, did you know that Victoria Day honours Queen Victoria, who was born on May 24, 1819, and reigned over Britain and Canada for over 63 years. First celebrated in Canada in the 1840s, after her death in 1901 it was formally established by Parliament as a permanent holiday — making Canada one of the only countries in the world that still marks her birthday.

Victoria Day is observed on the last Monday before May 25th each year, which is why the date shifts around a little.

For Canadians it's become as much about the unofficial start of summer as it is about the Queen herself — but for a military history museum, it's also a moment to remember just how much of Canada's early history, including the service of her soldiers and sailors, unfolded under the Victorian era and the empire she led.

See you next week!

During a detour on his trip through England, museum volunteer Kevin Hicks visited Shorncliffe Military Cemetery near Dover to pay his respects to Nursing Sister Victoria Belle Hennan.

For a time, Victoria’s uniform was proudly displayed on loan at the Saskatoon Museum of Military Artifacts. Although it has since been returned to the family, her story remains part of our museum’s memory.

Standing quietly at her grave, far from home yet forever connected to Canada, Kevin laid a wreath and Canadian flag, on behalf of the museum and the Nutana Legion in remembrance of her service and sacrifice.

Nursing Sisters served with extraordinary courage and compassion, often close to the dangers of war itself, caring for wounded soldiers under incredibly difficult conditions. Their stories are sometimes less visible in history, but no less important.

This small act of remembrance was our way of saying: we have not forgotten.
Lest we forget. 🇨🇦

Hi! I’m Jessie, and I work in preservation and conservation at the Saskatoon Museum of Military Artifacts.

Now, you might be wondering… why does a military museum have a narwhal tusk? Great question—but that’s a story for another day.

For now, here’s what I’ve been up to: I spent the last 18 hours carefully cleaning decades of dust off this ivory tusk. Conservation work is always slow and meticulous—you want to do as little as possible, while still removing anything that could cause damage over time. In this case, that means using hundreds of cotton Q-tips and a natural fiber toothbrush, gently lifting away dirt and debris bit by bit.

And if you’re thinking, “Wait, are you not supposed to use water on ivory?”—you’re absolutely right. So, what do we use instead? Believe it or not, the Canadian Institute of Conservation recommends… Ivory Snow.

Yes, the baby laundry detergent.

Have any preservation questions? Feel free to ask me in the comments below.

This isn’t a rock. It’s history.

This jagged chunk of metal sits quietly in our collection — but it travelled a very long way to get here.

On December 6, 1917, the French cargo ship Mont-Blanc, loaded with wartime explosives, collided with another vessel in Halifax Harbour. The resulting explosion was the largest human-made blast before the atomic age — it levelled an entire neighbourhood, killed nearly 2,000 people, and sent shrapnel flying for kilometres in every direction.

This piece of the Mont-Blanc didn't land in a field or a harbour. It ended up inside the home of Thomas Isnor of Halifax what a shock that was!

The map beside it shows the shaded zone of total devastation. The Narrows. The Richmond district. Gone.

We sometimes forget that artifacts don't have to be beautiful or polished to be profound. Sometimes the most important objects are the ones that simply survived — and landed where they did by pure chance.

Come look for it on your next visit. — it’s just small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Visit us today (1-4pm)
