History of the Centre


The USSU Pride Centre opened in 1997 under the name of the USSU Le***an, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) Centre as a student initiative, arising due to students’ recognition of an unsatisfied need on campus for a space that could provide information, support, and advocacy around LBGTT2IQQ issues. Although originally the Centre operated with limited funding, the dedicated volunteer

s and directors succeeded in building a library, organizing workshops and panels, and running discussion and support groups, along with other on-campus activities. In the summer of 1998, the Centre moved to its current location in the Memorial Union Building. The centre changed its name and mission statement in 2002 to be inclusive of transgender and ally students (LGBTA Centre). As the Centre celebrated its ten-year anniversary in 2007 as the USSU Pride Centre, it aims to include, support, and celebrate an even more diverse range of sexual orientations and gender identities.

Our struggles never happen in isolation. A colonial border doesn’t separate our suffering. The Pride Centre is open Monday-Friday from 9-4:30 to provide support, resources, and community for anyone who may be needing it in the coming weeks and months 🤍
