Targeted screening for high-risk groups, better access to treatment, and earlier intervention could significantly reduce the burden of kidney disease in Canada, according to a new report commissioned by The Kidney Foundation of Canada.
The report emphasizes the need for earlier detection and equitable access to care—especially for higher-risk populations such as people living with diabetes and Indigenous communities.
Because chronic kidney disease often develops without noticeable symptoms, many Canadians are not diagnosed until it has progressed to an advanced stage. This limits treatment options and increases the likelihood of costly interventions such as dialysis or transplantation.

Without action, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is projected to affect more than 6.2 million Canadians by 2050.
A new report commissioned by The Kidney Foundation of Canada reinforces the urgent need for governments to prioritize prevention, early detection, equitable access to care, and stronger kidney health data systems.
The findings build on The Kidney Foundation’s National Strategic Framework for Chronic Kidney Disease, which outlines a path toward a more sustainable, proactive kidney care system in Canada.
Kidney disease is not only a health issue — it is a growing economic challenge affecting patients, families, health systems, and the workforce.
Now is the time for coordinated action.
