Saskatoon Chamber Singers

Saskatoon Chamber Singers SCS supports Canadian music, artists, musicians, and is deeply passionate about choral music in SK! John’s, Newfoundland.

The Saskatoon Chamber Singers was founded in 1977 by a group of former Greystone Singers (University of Saskatchewan) who wanted to continue singing in a quality choral ensemble. The choir has been a finalist in both the CBC choral competition for amateur choirs and the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, British Columbia, and participated in the non-competitive Festival 500 in St. It

has also been the guest choir at Saskatchewan Sings, and sang at the installation of Lynda Haverstock (a former member) as Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan. In 2010, the choir performed at Podium, the biennial conference of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities, held in Saskatoon. The choir’s repertoire has been rich in variety since its establishment, and Canadian music has always been an important component of its programming. Perhaps best known for its annual Remembrance Day concert, the choir’s schedule is generally rounded out by a seasonal concert in December or January and one or two concerts in late winter and spring with varying themes, as well as regular appearances with the Saskatoon Symphony.

“May we cherish our matriarchs, and treasure them always.”

Saskatoon Chamber Singers is deeply grateful to askîhk Research Services for their sponsorship of our final concert, “A Bouquet for Mother”

askîhk Research Services is an Indigenous- and women-led archaeological consulting firm committed to culturally sensitive and trauma-informed investigations. We collaborate with communities to find unmarked graves and honour the children who disappeared from former Residential Schools across Turtle Island. By employing advanced technologies and inclusive methods, we assist with planning, fieldwork, interpretation, and memorialization, always prioritizing respect, care, and community leadership in every project. Our focus and expertise lie in ground penetrating radar and soil spectroscopy methods which we have employed in searches with communities all across turtle Island.
We are thrilled to partner with the Saskatoon Chamber Singers this month to bring you their Bouquet for Mother concert. We want to dedicate this concert to those who uphold the matriarchal spirit, to our two-spirit relatives, to the mothers left behind and to the matriarchs that could have been. And most importantly, to those Survivors, to the leaders they became, despite the people they could have become. May we cherish our matriarchs and treasure them always.

We have some extraordinary news to share with you all!

On Tuesday, we travelled to Regina to celebrate our Artistic Director, James Hawn, who had the honour of receiving the 2025 Volunteer Medal!

Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre has released the following statement:

"The 2025 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal recipients are an impressive group of people," Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre said. "They have worked generously and tirelessly in support of arts and culture, sports and recreation, youth and seniors, veterans and the military, and those living with disabilities and chronic illness. I am thrilled to acknowledge these remarkable individuals who have contributed in countless ways to our province."

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this process was to learn about the significant contributions that James has made to the choral community, not just in Saskatoon, but to the province and to Canada. We are extremely grateful to have him be a part of our choir.

Every song in this concert uses Shakespeare’s timeless works with a wide range of stylistic sounds. We sing choral pieces composed using verses from The Tempest, Hamlet, and Romeo & Juliet all the way to his legendary poetic sonnets.
We also have the honour of partnering with some local actors to have some dramatic readings!
