Often cited as one of the great Irish plays of the 20th century, Brian Frielβs Translations is set in 1833, County Donegal, Ireland, between the abolition of the Irish Parliament and the onset of the Great Famine. As a group of students, ranging from a semi-literate farmer to an elderly autodidact, pursue education at a hedge school, a detachment of Royal Engineers is tasked with mapping the region, recording local Gaelic place names and replacing them with English equivalents. The collision of cultures brings forth far-reaching consequences that impact the community profoundly. A comedic and poignant piece of writing, the play explores history, memory, language, culture, and the ever-repeating phenomenon of imperialism. It is a play that resonates in the world today.
