The Meewasin Valley Authority is a nonprofit organization dedicated to stewarding the natural and cultural heritage resources of the South Saskatchewan River Valley in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and area. With the support of the Province of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan, Meewasin undertakes programs and projects in river valley education, development and conservation. By creating opportunities for public awareness and enjoyment, Meewasin strives to increase understanding and to ensure a vibrant and healthy river valley. Meewasin's jurisdiction centres in Saskatoon and runs approximately 64 sq km along the river through Saskatoon and R.M. of Corman Park from Pike Lake in the southwest to Clarke's Crossing in the northeast. It encompasses conservation areas, parks, museums, interpretive centres, the university lands, canoe launches, community links, and over 90 km of Meewasin Trail. Including the South Saskatchewan River, there are 60 square miles in the Meewasin conservation zone.

Prescribed fire activities continuing today (weather permitting)

Crews from the 5th Canadian Prairies Training Exchange (TREX) are continuing operations in the Saskatoon area today (October 22), with prescribed fire activities planned at the Northeast Swale Ecological Core, Beaver Creek Conservation Area, and Hyde Park (City of Saskatoon Naturalized Parks) beginning at approximately 10:30 a.m. and continuing into the early evening, weather permitting.

Prescribed fire is a vital tool for prairie conservation, helping reduce fuel loads, improve wildlife habitat, and maintain healthy native grasslands. These carefully planned activities support the long-term health and resilience of our prairie ecosystems.

If you see smoke in the area, it may be related to these planned and monitored operations.

Prescribed fire activities continuing today (weather permitting)

Crews from the 5th Canadian Prairies Training Exchange (TREX) are continuing operations in the Saskatoon area today (October 21), with mop-up activities underway at yesterday's burn sites and a prescribed fire planned at Saskatoon Natural Grasslands this evening (weather permitting).

Yesterday, prescribed fires were successfully carried out at:
• Cranberry Flats Conservation Area (Meewasin)
• St. Denis National Wildlife Area (Canadian Wildlife Service)
• Brightwater Centre (Saskatoon Public Schools)

Prescribed fire is a vital tool for prairie conservation, helping reduce fuel loads, improve wildlife habitat, and maintain healthy native grasslands. These carefully planned activities support the long-term health and resilience of our prairie ecosystems.

If you see smoke in the area, it may be related to these planned and monitored operations.

Prescribed burns planned today (weather permitting)

Crews from the 5th Canadian Prairies Training Exchange (TREX) will be at three sites in the Saskatoon area today at :

- Saskatoon Public School Division: Brightwater Center
- Meewasin: Cranberry Flats Conservation Area
- Canadian Wildlife Service: St. Denis National Wildlife Area

These are small, carefully planned prescribed fire activities meant to reduce fuel loads and improve wildlife habitat. Fire was once a regular part of the prairies. Without it, trees, shrubs, and invasive weeds move into native grassland and threaten the wildlife that depend on it.

Safety comes first. Burns are done by trained personnel only, in spring or fall to avoid nesting birds and growing plants, and we stay in contact with neighbours, government agencies, and emergency services before, during, and after each burn.

If you see smoke, it's part of a planned and monitored burn.

Prescribed Fire Notice

Prescribed fire activities are planned this afternoon (October 19) at the Northeast Swale. Multiple units within the Northeast Swale Ecological Zone are included in the planned burn area.

The burn is conducted with partners from, Brightwater Center (Saskatoon Public Schools), Canadian Wildlife Service (Environment and Climate Change Canada), City of Saskatoon Naturalized Parks Program, Nature Conservancy of Canada – Prairie Region, Saskatchewan Provincial Parks, University of Saskatchewan Department of Plant Sciences, Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

If weather conditions are not suitable or stable enough for the burn to proceed, an updated notice will be issued.

The public is advised that smoke may be visible in the area and adjacent communities during these activities.

Why we burn: Fire helps reduce wildfire risk and supports conservation in this urban grassland, keeping nearby communities and wildlife safe while restoring biodiversity and protecting the land.

We are honoured to be the recipient of the 2026 Spirit of Saskatoon SABEX Award.

This award celebrates something we have always believed: Meewasin is one of Saskatoon's greatest treasures. Along with the wonderful people who call this city home, the Meewasin Valley is an icon that distinguishes Saskatoon from anywhere else on earth. It connects us to one another, brings us together, and deepens our connection to the land.

This recognition belongs to the incredible team behind Meewasin. Their talent, passion, and dedication are the magic behind everything we do. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, donors, sponsors, partners, and founding partners, the City of Saskatoon, Government of Saskatchewan, and University of Saskatchewan, whose support helps make our work possible.

Next week, the Saskatoon area will see something you don't often get to witness: fire used as a tool for caring for the land.

From October 19-23, 2026, the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange and crews from across partner organizations will gather for TREX, a prescribed fire training exchange. Participants learn from one another, build hands-on skills, and carry out planned, carefully managed burns on prairie grasslands.

So what is prescribed fire?

It's fire applied deliberately, under specific weather conditions and with a detailed plan, trained crews, and equipment ready. Prairies evolved with fire. Used well, it renews grassland, restores native prairie ecosystems, enhances biodiversity and ecosystem resilience, improves forage quality, supports wildlife habitat, maintains habitat for species at risk, reduces woody plant encroachment, and lowers the risk of wildfire by reducing excess fuel accumulation.

What to expect:

- Trained crews in bright protective gear
- Fire equipment on site
- Smoke in the area on burn days (weather permitting)

All burns depend on conditions, so schedules can change. We'll share updates as the week unfolds.

Prescribed fire preparation notice at Chief Whitecap Park.

The Meewasin Valley Authority, along with its partners, is carrying out prescribed fire preparation work at Chief Whitecap Park today, October 14, 2026.

Crews are "blacklining" the perimeter of three burn units. This means using low-intensity, controlled fire to burn a narrow strip of vegetation along the edge of each unit at the Chief Whitecap Park, within the three burn units.

When blacklining is done, the blackened strip has no fuel left, so it works as a firebreak. It keeps fire safely inside the unit during the main burns planned for next week's Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX), where participants will gain hands-on experience. Prescribed fire also supports the health of native prairie.

Residents may see smoke and fire crews in the area. Please follow posted signs and crew instructions, and keep dogs leashed and clear of the burn areas. There is no cause for alarm. Trained crews are on site, and the work is weather-dependent and may be postponed.

With fall colours and warm morning light, it's a beautiful time to experience the Meewasin Valley. These early morning views of River Landing are just one example of the many scenes waiting to be captured this season.

If you've been out exploring and taking photos, consider submitting your favourite shots to the Meewasin Through Your Eyes Photo Contest. The fall submission period is open until November 30, and photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Selected photos will be featured in the 2028/2029 Meewasin Valley Calendar, with proceeds supporting conservation efforts in the Valley. Every photo helps tell the story of this special place while contributing to its protection for future generations.
