The Meewasin Valley Authority is a nonprofit organization dedicated to stewarding the natural and cultural heritage resources of the South Saskatchewan River Valley in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and area. With the support of the Province of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan, Meewasin undertakes programs and projects in river valley education, development and conse

rvation. By creating opportunities for public awareness and enjoyment, Meewasin strives to increase understanding and to ensure a vibrant and healthy river valley. Meewasin's jurisdiction centres in Saskatoon and runs approximately 64 sq km along the river through Saskatoon and R.M. of Corman Park from Pike Lake in the southwest to Clarke's Crossing in the northeast. It encompasses conservation areas, parks, museums, interpretive centres, the university lands, canoe launches, community links, and over 90 km of Meewasin Trail. Including the South Saskatchewan River, there are 60 square miles in the Meewasin conservation zone.

What better way to celebrate a partnership than by hitting the trails together?

Meewasin CEO Mike Velonas was pleased to take part in the launch of the first-ever BHP Run Club on September 1. The event highlighted the impact of the partnership between BHP and Meewasin.

Over the past three years, BHP's support has helped Meewasin plant more than 5,000 trees, grow its volunteer program to over 850 volunteers contributing 16,000+ hours annually, and advance ecosystem restoration and prairie conservation initiatives across the Meewasin Valley.

The BHP Run Club is a great example of how this partnership connects people to the landscape they are helping protect, while fostering a shared appreciation for community, stewardship, and the outdoors!

We’re blown away by the incredible response to our Hold On to What Matters campaign.

Thanks to our community coming together over the past month, we’ve surpassed our $25,000 goal and raised an incredible $27,812.55!

Your support helps Meewasin care for the Valley’s trails and natural spaces, conserve and restore habitat, protect wildlife, and create opportunities for people to connect with nature and one another.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made a gift, shared the campaign, downloaded a meadowlark, or helped spread the word. And a very special thank you to the Myers Family for their generous $5,000 matching gift, which helped inspire even more community support.

Welcome to Beaver Creek Conservation Area, where animal masks and coats are considered formal wear, The Lorax sits next to a tick size chart, there's an entire bin dedicated to tracks, scats and fur, and stuffed animals somehow feels completely normal.

Some things are hard to explain. Some things just make sense.

As fall approaches, we're kicking off our seasonal cleanup efforts while our river valley needs it most.

Join us on September 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Rotary Park as we inspect and clean up the surrounding trails. Together, we can help keep our natural areas beautiful and prevent plastics and other litter from entering our watershed during the spring season.

We'll meet at the Rotary Park parking lot before heading out on the trails.

What a day!

Today, alongside incredible volunteers, the Meewasin team planted 800 native trees and shrubs at the ERCO Worldwide site along Wanuskewin Road.

Planting native tree species is crucial for the health of our riverbanks and the entire valley ecosystem. Plus, there are few better ways to spend a beautiful Saskatchewan day than getting your hands dirty for a great cause.

The sheep are baaaack at Meewasin!

Starting August 27, approximately 60 sheep will be brought to Beaver Creek Conservation Area as part of Meewasin’s conservation grazing program. Working alongside professional shepherd Jared Epp and his trained Border Collies, the flock will graze native prairie to help manage invasive vegetation, improve habitat for native plants and wildlife, and support the restoration of Saskatchewan’s endangered grassland ecosystems.

The sheep will remain at Beaver Creek before moving to the Northeast Swale on September 14, continuing their important conservation work across some of Meewasin’s priority grassland sites.

Visitors are welcome to observe the grazing project from designated public areas. To help keep both people and animals safe, please remain outside fenced grazing areas, keep dogs leashed and well away from the sheep and working dogs, and follow all posted signage while visiting.

Want to learn more than just spotting the flock? Join us for one of our free Grazing Demonstrations and discover how targeted grazing supports healthy prairie ecosystems. Meet shepherd Jared Epp, watch his skilled stock dog in action, and learn how conservation grazing benefits plant diversity, wildlife habitat, and soil health.

For an even more immersive experience, join us for a Grazing Dinner. This unique event brings together land conservation and fine dining in the heart of Beaver Creek Conservation Area. Guests will enjoy a multi-course menu by Odla while taking in a live conservation grazing demonstration and learning how grazing is helping restore Saskatchewan’s native grasslands.
