Sound up!! We are kicking off our new Sounds Of The Valley series with some ASMR from our rodent pals, the beavers. Get ready for lots of chomp sounds.

Speaking of beavers, Meewasin is launching a brand new walking tour, the Guided Beaver Walking Tours starting Monday, June 8 and running every Monday until August 31.

Did you know that Saskatoon is home to a healthy population of beavers? Join our guides for a walk along the South Saskatchewan River and learn how these remarkable animals, often called nature’s engineers, shape our local environment and thrive within the city.

This is not a wildlife spotting tour, it’s a conversation about the amazing animals that call the Meewasin Valley home (although we hope to see some of these animals along the way!!)

Experience the Northeast Swale after dark during the annual Firefly Hike 🌟

The annual Firefly Hike at the Northeast Swale with the Saskatoon Nature Society gives participants a unique opportunity to experience the Swale after dark and discover a completely different side of this native prairie and wetland ecosystem.

Led by Marten Stoffel and Renny Grilz, the hike highlights:

- The importance of dark skies for wildlife and ecosystem health.
- Nocturnal species that use the Swale, including bats, owls, insects, amphibians, and other wildlife.
- Fireflies as indicators of healthy habitat and functioning ecosystems.
- How native prairie ecosystems remain active and interconnected throughout the night.
- The value of urban conservation spaces that allow people to experience nature in a different way.

Join us this Friday, May 29th from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. to see the Northeast Swale light up. Meet at the entrance to the Northeast Swale off Lowe Road, north of Agra; no registration required.

Happy Arbor Week!

Arbor Week is not only about planting trees, but also about long-term stewardship, ecological resilience, and protecting the health of urban ecosystems.

Urban forests are a critical component of the ecological health and resilience of the South Saskatchewan River Valley. Trees provide habitat, shade, cooling, erosion control, improved air quality, and support biodiversity throughout the Valley. These systems require not only active management and long-term ecological planning, but also collaboration between organizations, landowners, volunteers, and the community.

At Meewasin, we are continuing this work and celebrating Arbor Week by hosting our Tree Wrapping event at Diefenbaker Park. Participants can help wrap trees to prevent beaver damage. This is one tool Meewasin uses to help balance coexistence between natural beaver activity and the protection of planted or high-value urban trees. Sign up through the link and join us on May 27 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm: https://meewasin.com/volunteerschedule/

Arbor Week runs May 24 to 30, 2026, with a full week of activities organized by the SOS Trees Coalition. To explore other ways to get involved, visit the link: https://www.sostrees.ca/arborweek.html

As we dug through the archives, we came across retro Meewasin brochures from our early Walking Tours.

They highlighted where city and water meet Saskatoon’s river edge, and many of the stops are the very same places we continue to showcase today. From the stories behind our iconic bridges, to the historic Bessborough Hotel, to the wildlife supported by the river, these places have long shaped our city’s story.

While the tour has evolved over the years, its heart remains the same. We still explore the past, present, and future of the Meewasin Valley, illustrating how the river and its banks have always been intertwined with Saskatoon’s story, and how Meewasin is working to preserve them for generations to come.

Our Downtown Walking Tour runs every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning until September 26. We’ve added some new stops since those retro brochures (like River Landing🌱), so you’ll have to join us to discover how the story continues along the river trails of downtown Saskatoon.
