Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council The Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council is a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to helping Saskatchewan Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Strategic Priority Goals

- A Strong Community: SWRC is a key player in bringing together a strong waste-focused community. We provide information to the public about recycling, provide current information to our members and advocate for waste reduction in the province.

- Organics: SWRC is a leader in the discussion about food waste prevention. We are seen as a key resource on backyard composting and as knowledgeable about larger-scale organic waste management solutions. Every Saskatchewan community has provisions for some type of organic waste diversion.

- Source Reduction: SWRC facilitates the adoption of reduction and reuse practices. Across Saskatchewan there is recognition of the need to prioritize reduction and reuse over recycling, with an emphasis on the value of these practices compared to wasteful alternatives.

Let us tell you a story...

Look in a black garbage bag and someone’s world opens like a scrapbook. We estimate our waste based on who we wish to be, but bins and recycling statistics don't lie to spare our egos.

For our Less is More blog author Claire, her garbage can is a reminder that the things we love - hobbies, pets, parties - still inevitably make some trash. But also that our collective habits are changing for the beter.

This week we got to meet with Tourism Saskatchewan to talk about compost options!

Like most offices, their Saskatoon branch has its share of coffee grounds, tea bags, fruit peels, and other lunchroom leftovers to deal with. 🍌🥗🫘🫖

We talked about a few good choices:

🚶‍♂️ Take it home (to a compost bin or cart)
🪱 Vermicompost (an earthworm bin that stays inside)
🌱Get an office green cart (talk to your waste pick-up company)
⚡ Use a food waste dehydrator (dry and shrink it, take it away later)

Different options work best for different groups. In this case, taking scraps home was the winner. Nice and simple!

We want to say a big thank you to two of our summer students; Nikola Erasmus & Nathalie Nagy!

They made up the 2026 Recycling Ambassadors team, travelling around the province promoting the Used Oil and Antifreeze recycling program on behalf of Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp. (SAARC) ♻🛢🛻🌾

In addition to checking in on SARRC Eco-Centres and other voluntary drop-off locations around Saskatchewan, they also took in community events like car shows and Ag in Motion.

(This year their friend, Oil Drop, was even able to hang out with them a few times. ✨💧✨👀)

Please help us in saying a big thank you for all the hard work they did this summer!

While wandering through Value Village one day Naomi spotted a pair of shoes that looked almost brand new. They were comfortable, stylish, and fit perfectly. She thought she'd scored a great find.

Until she wore them. Halfway through the day, the entire footbed separated from the sole of one shoe. Maybe that’s the risk of buying second-hand, she thought.

Then she remembered she had a tube of Shoe Goo at home… 👀👞👞🧼🪣🔧

Today we'd like to thank all the groups involved in the Gateway Co-op construction project in the Town of Sturgis, SK. The 2025 waste reduction award for a partnership is shared between:

The project used salvage timber from decommissioned grain elevators for its primary building material, resulting in a 12,682 square foot commercial building constructed of 82% reclaimed timber (148,427 board feet, 167 tonnes). 📏 🪚 🏗️ 🏬

Today we are pleased to shout out 2025 Waste Reduction Award winner, RNF Ventures Ltd.

RNF Ventures were nominated for their security upgrade renovation project at Pine Grove Correctional Centre. This job involved replacing 180 detention doors and the installation of new security controls throughout the facility. Despite the challenge of working in an occupied detention centre under active security constraints, RNF Ventures achieved a waste diversion rate of 97% by sorting and recycling metals, paper, concrete, and other materials. ♻️ 🔩 📄 🧹

Today we recognize Ardent Mills Canada - their Saskatoon branch is this year's Large Business Waste Reduction Award winner! Through smart sorting, innovative upcycling, and a committed team, they cut their landfill waste by 44% in a single year.

Key changes included:

♻️ Accurately tracking different waste streams

👷‍♀️ Creating clearly-labelled waste segregation zones

🌾 An ‘upcycled avenue’ that redirects flour waste and other organics toward animal feed, composting, or carbon extraction rather than garbage

These efforts strengthened partnerships with local recycling organizations, and generated significant cost saving and prevented over 350 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually.

Today we toast The Salvation Army Thrift Store, National Recycling Operations. They won the 2025 Waste Reduction Award for non-profit organizations!

The Salvation Army Thrift Store carefully sorts donated clothing, footwear, household goods, and small appliances so that sellable items return to the community through their stores, while unsellable materials are directed to vetted recycling partners, ensuring as little as possible ends up in a landfill. In 2025 their Saskatchewan operations diverted over 1,600 metric tonnes of material - that's something to celebrate.
