What’s the right thing to do?

Whether you’re studying health care, business, education, ministry, or another field, you’ll face questions with no easy answers. Whose needs come first? What does fairness look like? How do we respond when our values pull us in different directions?

There’s a place on campus where the questions in your field meet the questions of your faith.

This November, Practices for Ethical Reflection, taught by Dr. OhWang Kwon, brings Christian traditions into conversation with questions of care, justice, and responsibility. Students will develop ways to think critically about ethical issues in their work and communities.

Thanksgiving invites us to pay attention to what has been given to us.

This year, we are grateful for the students who bring their questions, experience, curiosity, and calling into our classrooms. We are grateful for faculty and staff who give themselves to the work of teaching, learning, and formation.

We are grateful for the churches, communities, alumni, friends, and partners who continue to make theological education a shared work.

And we are grateful for the conversations that stretch us, the relationships that sustain us, and the opportunity to keep learning what faithful Christian leadership looks like in a changing world.

From all of us at the Saskatoon Theological Union, Happy Thanksgiving.

Whose voices do we hear in the hymns we sing?

St. Andrew’s College professor Dr. Becca Whitla recently brought her work on decolonizing congregational singing to an international hymnology conference in Strasbourg, France.

In this reflection, she explores how we can examine our singing traditions, learn from the ways communities make hymns their own, and make room for voices from the Global South and marginalized communities.

You know your material. But can your audience hear it, follow it, and stay with you?

Join Sanders Whiting, Voice and Presentation Skills Specialist with Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Educational Excellence, for a hands-on workshop on connecting more effectively with an audience in lectures, meetings, symposiums, and other presentation settings.

Through guided exercises, participants will work on common challenges like nervousness, low volume, speaking too quickly, and monotone delivery, while developing a more balanced, expressive, and engaging presentation style.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, we join people across Canada in marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We remember the children who were taken from their families and communities through the residential school system, those who never returned home, and the survivors, families, and communities who continue to live with its consequences.

For Christian institutions, this day also requires honesty about the role churches played in colonization and residential schools.

Truth and reconciliation are not things we complete by observing a single day. They ask us to listen, to learn, to examine the stories and assumptions we have inherited, and to allow Indigenous voices, communities, and ways of knowing to change how we understand our shared life.

At St. Andrew’s College and Lutheran Theological Seminary, that work belongs within theological education itself. We remain committed to learning from Indigenous teachers, leaders, communities, and the land, and to preparing people for ministry with a deeper understanding of the histories and relationships that shape this place.

September 30 is a day to remember.

And to keep listening.

"Sycamore Grace and the Gaze of God" - an offering of the Oliver & Gruchy Learning Centre at St. Andrew’s College, Saskatoon, in collaboration with GreenSpirit Chaplaincy and the Living Skies, Prairie to Pine, and Northern Spirit Regions of The United Church of Canada.

When was the last time you climbed a tree?

For many of us, the answer takes us all the way back to childhood.

This October’s Contemplative Gathering begins there, with autumn trees, childhood wonder, and the story of Zacchaeus climbing a sycamore tree just to catch a glimpse of Jesus.

He climbs the tree hoping to see Jesus.

Instead, Jesus sees him.

Join us for a quiet hour of reflection on Sycamore Grace and the Gaze of God.

Want to go an alternative route for your next paper?

Most university libraries are built to help you explore a subject through the usual academic disciplines. At the Saskatoon Theological Union library, you can take another route into the questions you’re working on.

What does theology have to say about history, justice, politics, literature, health, education, culture, the environment, or what it means to be human?

Our collection is built around those kinds of questions. And our library staff know how to help you find theological resources and bring a theological lens to the work you’re already doing.

You’ll also find a quiet, comfortable place to read and study, at 1121 College Drive.

Sometimes the alternate route takes you somewhere the usual one doesn’t.

College Drive is making everybody rethink how they get where they’re going.

University can do that too.

You learn to ask better questions about history, politics, science, culture, justice, society and what it means to be human.

But some questions don’t always fit easily into the university classroom.

What does faith have to do with any of this?
Where does meaning come from?
What do we do with suffering?
What do we owe one another?
What kind of life is worth building?

Theology lives on that pathway.

This September, the Saskatoon Theological Union (STU), made up of St. Andrew’s College and Lutheran Theological Seminary, is going to share a little more about what happens at 1121 College Drive, and some of the places theology meets your field and the questions you’re already asking.

Consider theology another route through the questions.
