The Deaf Children's Society of Saskatchewan is committed to empowering deaf or hard-of-hearing children and children with deaf or hard-or-hearing family-members through the provision of advocacy, mentoring, resources, and collaborative networks. or hard of hearing family-members through advocacy, mentoring, resources, and collaborative networks. These children require full access to language in their homes, schools, and communities, and we believe the support of deaf role-models and a focus on early literacy are the keys to assure their optimal intellectual & social development. Research consistently demonstrates that fluency in Sign Language and English offers deaf and hard of hearing students (including those with implants) the best opportunity for social and academic success; so both should be a consistent part of their environment. We believe there should be access to identification & intervention by qualified providers and that deaf professionals may offer expertise that is equal to, or greater than, hearing professionals. Parents & professionals have rights & responsibilities as advocates and primary decision-makers for our children.
