This is for everyone who is wondering just how in the hell your staff are gonna manage. How in the hell you’re gonna feed people and cover costs for operations. And how in the hell you’re going to keep it all together.

Carrying this weight alone is more than you signed up for.

The pressure is real.

You’re supposed to walk in Monday morning with a plan. You’re supposed to have answers about what the tariffs mean for your funding, for your donors, for the communities you serve. You’re supposed to steady the ship.

And you don’t know.

You don’t know what’s coming. You don’t know how bad it gets. You don’t know if that major gift conversation you’ve been building for six months just evaporated because your donor’s business is about to get squeezed. You don’t know if your government funding is safe. You don’t know if the board is going to panic.

I’ve been in this sector for over 20 years. I’ve sat across from leaders in boardrooms and back offices and parking lots after bad meetings. And the ones who scare me aren’t the ones who are afraid. The ones who scare me are the ones pretending they’re not.

The thing is - coming together is Canadian. Helping your neighbor? Canadian. And guess what… fundraising IS Canadian.

It’s literally community showing up for community. It’s neighbours deciding that the things they love are worth protecting with their wallets and their time and their hope.

Our sovereignty is not a bargaining chip. Our identity is not up for negotiation.

You are allowed to be scared and proud at the same time. You’re allowed to not have the answer yet. You’re allowed to walk into that office tomorrow and say “I don’t know, but I know we figure this out together” and mean it.

Maybe you’ve been in fundraising for a while, and maybe your fundraising isn’t doing so well…

And secretly, you think it’s you. That you’re not doing it right. That you’re the problem. That you’re the one who should be better, more professional, more prepared, more polished, more… Just… More of something that you’re not.

Here to tell you – as someone who closes seven-figure gifts on the regular and 20 years in fundraising – it’s never you.

I’ve done asks with food on my clothes, with my hair out of place, with without knowing all of the answers to all of the things that needed to be talked about… And guess what? Those people said yes.

I’ve also done tasks where everything went perfectly. And those people said no.
