On Wednesday, UFCW 1400 and our larger community lost a treasured labour leader. Brian Stewart was a dedicated advocate for workers in Saskatchewan, and an important foundation of UFCW 1400. His impact continues today in the benefits and supports that he helped to build into collective agreements across the Province, and the leaders that he mentored. Our condolences to his family, he will be missed.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Maurice Werezak. As the former President of UFCW 248p, and in the many roles he played in support of workers in Saskatchewan, Maurice has always been an ally and friend to UFCW 1400 members across the Province. He and his loving partner Carol, an active and strong UFCW 1400 sister, have had a lasting impact on our communities and the workers in them.

UFCW 1400 members, staff and executive board have been proud to support the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada throughout the 40 years of our partnership. All of us can find family, friends, sisters and brothers at work who have been affected by blood cancers. In addition, many of our families who have been diagnosed with other forms of cancer have benefited from the research that llsc has funded in the development of new, more effective treatments. It truly has been a Labour of Love.

September 30 is the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation.

This federal statutory holiday honors the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. It serves as a public commemoration and acknowledgment of the history and horrific impact of residential schools on First Nation families and it is a vital part of the federal government’s reconciliation process.

140 federally-run residential schools operated in Canada from 1867 to 1996. Survivors advocate for recognition and reparations and demand accountability for the harm caused to students, their families, and their communities.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established from 2008-2015 to collect information about the people affected by residential schools. The commission made 94 calls for action — the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80.

All Canadians are encouraged to wear orange shirts on Sept. 30 to promote the concept and understanding that “Every Child Matters.” But there’s more to do beyond wearing orange shirts.

This past Sunday, September 7, we recognized an unfortunate anniversary. It has been 2 years since the Heritage Inn has Locked Out the members at their locations.

This is a lock out. We did not threaten to walk off the job, we did not refuse to go to work, we didn't even refuse to bargain... the employer just locked the union out.

Since the lock out started, this employer has been found guilty of bargaining in bad faith, and the Saskatchewan Labour Board has found that they were guilty of interfering in workers choices.

Instead of negotiating, this employer seems content to proceed through the various levels of courts, hearings and tribunals.

There is a motive... for every day that this lock out continues, the employer can ignore the collective agreement.

We will continue to support the workers on the picket lines in both Saskatoon and Moose Jaw. In the next coming months, we will be pushing both the Labour Relations Board, and the Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety to intervene and honour the certification order that the employer wants to ignore, and protect workers rights.
