Our Story

The School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS) was founded on July 1, 2007 as one of three new interdisciplinary, graduate-student only schools at the University of Saskatchewan. Our first ten students began their studies in September 2008. We originally offered one professional-style masters degree (Master of Sustainable Environmental Management), a thesis-based Master of Environment and Sustainability and a research-intensive Doctor of Philosophy in Environment and Sustainability. In 2014, SENS began offering an Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability and in 2016, we expanded our professional degree, one-year programs to include the Master of Water Security.

We've since grown from ten students and four faculty members in 2008, to a community of 108 students, 27 core faculty members and ten staff members in Fall 2017. Throughout our growth, we have taken care to ensure the quality of student experience. Our student body is highly inter-cultural, with a mix of Canadian, First Nations, Métis and international students. Over 25 different countries are represented within SENS. This diversity contributes to broadening student perspectives and creates an atmosphere of global relevance.
