The Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians (SCFP) is adding our voice to myriad of organizations who have expressed concern about the closure of Prairie Harm Reduction (PHR) in Saskatoon. Since the closure of PHR on April 9, 2026, there has been a documented surge in overdoses, resulting in patient harm and increased strain on an already struggling health system.
We would like to commend the health care workers, including family physicians and medical learners working in primary care, emergency rooms, and addictions care, on stepping up to attempt to meet the needs that this closure has created. Your dedication to the vulnerable populations of Saskatchewan have made a meaningful difference.
Harm reduction in substance use is an evidence-based intervention that saves lives. It is a crucial component of substance use care in conjunction with access to treatment and recovery programs. The SCFP is calling on the Saskatchewan government to re-invest in harm reduction services as part of a comprehensive substance use treatment approach.
