We’re getting ready to kick off something special at the WCABP 2026 Conference — and it starts with our Silent & Live Auction in support of the Dr. Murray Jelinski Scholarship Fund.

This fund was created to honor Dr. Jelinski’s 21 years of dedication to WCABP and his passion for bovine practice, students, and the sustainability of rural veterinary medicine. Proceeds from the auction will help support fourth-year WCVM and UCVM students pursuing externships in rural bovine practice.

📸 Take a look at just a few of the incredible items that will be up for bid!
🎤 Don’t miss the live auction following Thursday night’s dinner, featuring Dr. Denis Nagel as auctioneer.

With the conference starting in just a few days, we’re excited to see everyone there and can’t wait to launch this meaningful initiative together. Come ready to bid, support future bovine veterinarians, and celebrate a lasting legacy!

Dear members,

I am sure you are dealing with the latest issue of traceability. I hope this new updated statement from CFIA might be of assistance to you when speaking to your clients. We are working on having someone from CFIA, CCIA, and CCA at our conference this next week to discuss the current situation.

Sincerely Jay Thurgood

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is aware of public discussion regarding the proposed amendments to Part XV (Traceability) of the Health of Animals Regulations.

Since October is RVT month, we thought this would be the perfect time to introduce our first RVT board member! Welcome Lauren!

Lauren Stefaniuk, RVT, began her journey in veterinary medicine working at her neighbourhood small animal clinic in her hometown of Calgary, AB. While studying at Olds College, where she earned her diploma in Animal Health Technology in 2017, Lauren developed a strong interest in bovine medicine and production. This newfound passion led her to complete her practicum at a cow-calf ambulatory practice in Okotoks, AB, opening the door to a career in food animal veterinary medicine. After passing the VTNE, Lauren returned to the Olds area to begin her career as a mixed animal Registered Veterinary Technologist. In March 2020, she joined the team at Veterinary Agri-Health Services (VAHS), a cow-calf and feedlot ambulatory practice based in Rocky View County, AB, where she still practices today. Lauren’s primary responsibilities with VAHS include clinical practice, research, and export administration. Driven by her commitment to professional growth and to better serve both clients and the company, she became certified in bovine pregnancy detection in November 2023, and is currently a candidate with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice to obtain her Veterinary Technician Specialist designation in the Production Medicine category, pending successfully completion of the final exam. In addition to her individual goals, Lauren is passionate about empowering RVTs to pursue careers in food animal medicine and strives to use her voice to advocate for them to be supported and encouraged to practice to the fullest extent of their training and skills. In September 2024, she had the honour of speaking at the 57th Annual AABP Conference in Columbus, Ohio, where she presented on the value of delegating permitted tasks to credentialed veterinary technicians (CVTs), as well as some organizational tips to help maximize efficiency in the field. Recognizing the growing challenges posed by the veterinary shortage, Lauren believes RVTs play a vital role in enhancing practice productivity, profitability, and reducing the workload on veterinarians. This belief inspired her to pursue a position on the WCABP Board of Directors, where she now proudly serves as the inaugural RVT Ex-Officio member. Lauren is grateful for the opportunity to represent bovine RVTs and is proud to contribute to the continued growth and support of the profession through her involvement with the WCABP.
