A couple of weeks ago, our club celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Lesya Ukrainka statue on the University of Saskatchewan campus, the 35th anniversary of Ukrainian independence, and the 135th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada.

This special garden event was held in partnership with the Murray Library, St. Thomas More College’s Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage, and our club, the University of Saskatchewan Ukrainian Students’ Association.

The event also marked several exciting announcements, including the appointment of Dr. Nadya Foty-Oneschuk as the inaugural Lesya Ukrainka Chair. The chair received tremendous support through a $500,000 gift from the Stephen and Michele Worobetz Foundation and a $100,000 donation from Dr. Roma and Mr. Stefan Franko.

We are proud to celebrate these milestones and the continued recognition, preservation, and advancement of Ukrainian heritage at the University of Saskatchewan and beyond!

Today, we celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day🌻

This sunflower field is especially meaningful to us. The sunflower is an important symbol of Ukraine, representing resilience, hope, and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people. The golden field beneath the blue sky also beautifully reflects the colours of Ukraine’s national flag. 💙💛

Yesterday, we also recognized National Flag Day of Ukraine, making this weekend a special time to celebrate Ukrainian identity, culture, history, and independence.

From all of us at the University of Saskatchewan Ukrainian Students’ Society, we wish everyone a meaningful and happy Independence Day!

Our members are enjoying their time over the summer months beautifying the Lesya Ukrainka statue! She turns 50 this year! Planting and caring for these flowers to surround her is one way our student group can honour her and her works. 🌼

Some info on the statue:
Lesya (1871-1913) was a Ukrainian poet and writer with great talent. She spoke Ukrainian, French, Italian, German, Russian, Polish, Greek, Latin and English. Her love for language and literature was m. Many of her works incorporated Ukrainian culture and folklore while exploring themes of human dignity, personal integrity, social alienation, feminism, loneliness and patriotism. At a time when Ukrainians were heavily oppressed she promoted Ukrainian culture and opposed the Russian command. The statue was given as a gift commissioned by the Association for Cultural Relations of USSR. However, initial controversy arose as some viewed her as an attempt to justify and dignify the injustices of the Soviets. Despite the pushback, she is now a prominent reminder and symbol of our strong Ukrainian roots and pride.
