The Saskatoon Kennel & Obedience Club has officially wrapped up its first Sprinter Events of the 2026 season — and what a fantastic weekend it was!
Held at the beautiful Vanscoy venue, the event drew an enthusiastic turnout of competitors, volunteers, and spectators to kick off the Saskatchewan Sprinter season. A huge thank you goes to Gwen for once again generously allowing SKOC to use her acreage for the weekend.
The excitement began Friday evening with Sprinter Fun Runs, where all three one-hour time slots filled quickly, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport.
Saturday’s Trials 1 and 2 began with cool, cloudy conditions and a touch of rain — weather that seemed to inspire some especially fast runs from the dogs. By afternoon, the skies cleared and temperatures warmed nicely. Sunday’s Trials 3 and 4 featured sunny skies and a light breeze, creating near-perfect conditions for chasing "the bunny" (lure).
Throughout the weekend, there were countless qualifying runs and many new titles earned as dogs and handlers showcased their speed, teamwork, and enthusiasm on the course.
“These events truly take a village,” and SKOC extends sincere thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the weekend such a success. Special appreciation goes to the dedicated SKOC crew — Katie, Judy, Susan, Lavella, Danika, Rowan, Lynn, Louise, and Mindy — along with people from outside our club that stepped up to help us out – Gwen, Cathy, and Cheryl. We really appreciated your help!!
A special thank you also goes to lure operator Dee, whose skill and consistency throughout the weekend helped keep the dogs safe while bringing out their best performances on the course.
SKOC also thanks Martensville Veterinary Hospital for generously donating two wonderful gift baskets for exhibitor and volunteer draws. Congratulations to Shania and Lexi, along with their owners, on taking home the prizes.
One of the highlights of Sprinter events is the teamwork involved between releasers, catchers, volunteers, and exhibitors. From setup to teardown, everyone pitched in to ensure the event ran smoothly — a reminder of what the dog sport community can accomplish together.
SKOC is already looking ahead to its next Sprinter Events scheduled for July 17–19 and looks forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting weekend of running the 100-meter dash!
