June is Men’s Mental Health Month, an opportunity to continue conversations around wellbeing and support in agriculture.

New research from the Canadian Men's Health Foundation tells us what many in farming communities already sense: too many men are navigating stress and isolation without enough people to talk to. In rural and agricultural communities, that distance can feel even wider.

Yet we also know that connection is already part of how agricultural communities operate. Checking in on a neighbour, making time for a conversation, showing up when things get hard are everyday acts that matter more than we often realize.

If you or someone you know is looking for support, AgTalk offers anonymous online peer support for the agricultural community, available 24/7 in English and French. You can also find crisis lines, ag-informed counselling, and mental health resources through our support hub.

Pride Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many 2SLGBTQIA+ people who contribute to agriculture and rural communities across Canada.

From farms and ranches to research, advocacy, education, and community leadership, 2SLGBTQIA+ people have always been part of rural life.

At The Do More Agriculture Foundation, we believe that everyone in agriculture deserves to show up as themselves and experience a sense of belonging in the communities and industry they care about.

This month, we're also reflecting on the important connection between inclusion, belonging, and mental wellbeing in our latest blog post, Belonging in Agriculture: Why Inclusive Communities Matter. The article also highlights the emerging Canadian Q***r AgriFood Network and encourages queer-identifying people working across agriculture and agri-food to connect, learn more, and help cultivate a stronger sense of belonging within our industry.

Happy Pride Month from all of us. 💚

Season 1 of Hay Are We Okay? is a wrap!

Eight episodes featuring eight communities showing up for mental health in agriculture in their own way. One moment that stayed with us was learning about hundreds of people at a rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming wearing yellow feathers in their hat bands — a simple act of solidarity that says: I'm here, and it's okay to talk. It's a small symbol that opens bigger conversations.

We also heard from a family who turned their woodlot into a retreat for farmers and first responders, men finding purpose shoulder to shoulder across Canada, the power of cinema and theatre to open mental health conversations, and so many more inspiring and heartwarming stories.

If you haven't listened yet, Season 1 is waiting for you - learn more at https://hubs.ly/Q04k0RsP0 or wherever you get your podcasts.

Conversations are happening across Canada in June.

This month, we’ll be sharing stories, resources, reflections, and conversations connected to Pride Month, Indigenous History Month, Men’s Mental Health Month, and the importance of community across rural spaces.

Agriculture is built on people looking out for one another, through neighbors checking in, and by communities continuing to show up.

We’re glad you’re here with us.

A farmer reached a breaking point with burnout—and decided to respond in a way that would reach others like her.

She began mailing $100 gift cards to farmers across the continent with one simple message: take care of yourself.

That farmer is Clara Coleman, founder of Real Farmer Care. In Episode 8 of Hay Are We Okay?, she joins host Merle Massie to talk about why farmers resist self-care—and what shifts when they finally receive it.
