PATROL REPORT Monday June 1st

4 of us patrolled by vehicle.

We drove to encampments handing out sandwiches, macaroni with tomatoes, cookies and brownies as well as water.

We also had hygiene, some clothes, blankets, rain ponchos, and of course socks and naloxone.

It was a good patrol visiting with relatives we know and new ones we hope to see again.

Reminder: tell Saskatoon to leave encampments alone, that people having consistent shelter and agency over their lives is safer (obviously) than having their belongings destroyed and worrying about raids — we know there are not enough shelter spaces and shelters can be unsafe. Housing now, but at the very least, leave encampments alone. See the link here https://linktr.ee/saskatoonsageclan for more info.

PATROL REPORT Friday May 29

Four of us went on a hot walk around the core.

We checked up on some folks and made sure everybody had water and electrolytes. We shared some food, socks, underwear, caps, hygiene products, nalaxone, backpacks and totes as well.

The sun hit our relatives hard. It was dangerously hot and the sun was a real threat to people. We saw a bit of sunstroke, but thankfully no emergencies. I appreciate everyone who has been checking up and giving out water and electrolytes during the heatwave. It was crucial to many people that folks and orgs were out there protecting the community.

Despite the heat, we chatted and laughed with people, and generally shared a good time.

While our original petition pushed for the city of Saskatoon to leave encampments alone this past winter, we now have our sights set on future years.

We want our unhoused relatives to have stable places to rest and connect. Ideally everyone would have a safe home to call their own, and we cannot ignore the need for real housing solutions.

Overnight shelters are necessary and important, and work well for some. For others they are spaces of instability, they are inaccessible, or they are downright unsafe. They cannot be the only option as they are now.

While we keep pushing for meaningful and long-term solutions at the federal and provincial level, our city has to stop destroying the community-built shelters of encampments every winter. We don’t want a single relative displaced or a single tent thrown out again.

Please sign this petition and tell the city you support encampments and demand they support them as well with essential services to make encampments as safe as possible.
