As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to truly thank the people who make our community so special. 💙

Our volunteers give more than their time; they create connection, joy, and a sense of belonging in everything they do. From our Kiwanis Rhythm Band and Drumline to bowling, bingo, and special events like our Winter Carnival, Summer Wind-Up, and Pancake Breakfast Gala, their impact is felt everywhere.

2026 Marks Cosmopolitan Industries 50th year of recycling in Saskatoon!

In the early 1970’s Mid-Western News received comic books and magazines from a supplier and provided them to stores in Saskatoon to sell. If a comic didn’t sell, the supplier would take the unsold copies back each month, so long as the covers were removed.
Mid-Western didn’t have the time to rip off covers of magazines every month, so they contracted Cosmopolitan Industries to provide the service.

Mid-Western received the covers and program participants had an enjoyable and purposeful activity with a Saskatoon business.

This resulted in one problem; all the comic books without covers were being shipped to the landfill!

Cosmo’s first Executive Director Alf Wilson didn’t like the idea of sending so much paper to the landfills so utilizing his strong business background he turned paper into money and found someone who would buy the left-over material. This is how he gained the title of Father of Recycling in Saskatoon and thus started the contract with Fibre Form Industries Ltd, out of Tisdale SK.

However, Fibre Form liked all the good clean paper they were receiving they wanted more but Cosmo didn’t have any more. That was when they asked the good people of Saskatoon for help.
