We are a 100% volunteer/foster based non-profit Dog Rescue in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
Our mission is to rescue & re-home dogs into loving furever homes & families. SSDR is based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and operated through a network of big hearts from Saskatchewan to British Columbia and down the US West Coast. All of our dogs are housed with volunteer fosters throughout Saskatoon and
surrounding areas. When SSDR was first created, our main mission was to rescue small breed dog
s. However, with the help of numerous volunteers, SSDR has grown into an organization that rescues dogs of all shapes, ages and sizes! We rescue dogs from Saskatoon (and surrounding areas), Northern Communities and from the high-kill shelters throughout California where overcrowding causes the untimely deaths of an alarmingly high number of innocent animals each and every day. Many of these dogs and puppies are literally rescued from death in the nick of time, as is true with SSDR's first rescue, a black chihuahua puppy named JOEY

Size Small Dog Rescue (SSDR) Inc. comes from humble beginnings as a small, local dog rescue based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Although the rescue work primarily occurs in Saskatoon and surrounding area, our organization impacts communities across the province, in neighboring provinces, as well as pockets of the United States. This growth has allowed us to expand resources into Nevada and Southern California where we partner with small and medium sized animal shelters who are at or above capacity which could result in euthanization of these animals. When we mention our partnership with American shelters, it is important to note that our relationship must be mutually beneficial for continued success. We feel as SSDR that our efforts are needed at home too, which is why we are a key member in a Saskatchewan based network of animal rescuers. This community is how we find and help local dogs within the province to become physically and mentally well so that adopters can welcome these local āmuttsā (a.k.a. mixed-breed dogs) into their loving homes. Whether the dog is local to our own community, or takes a long journey before arriving, it will be welcomed by one of our amazing foster families.
Our 100% volunteer-based organization includes foster homes who have specialized skills in rehabilitation, socialization, and training. Medical and physical rehabilitation are also managed through foster homes, when this type of care is required after medical procedures or trauma. Understanding how SSDR uses its resources is important because we are always looking for feedback to become more efficient and help more dogs! Our monetary donations are primarily used to fund veterinary care, which can range in the thousands per month! Yes āthatās 12 invoices per year! This veterinary care includes:
- spay or neuter surgery for each animal
- required vaccines
- wellness exams
- antibiotics
- flea & tick prevention
- professional grooming
- and all other specialized treatments that an animal may require
Donations to SSDR are also used to purchase supplies and equipment such as dog kennels, exercise pens, microchip reader, laptop computers (for bookkeeping and communications), etc. Some of this growth and evolution that SSDR is undergoing will result in a slightly redefined direction.
Our purpose of helping dogs in need will always guide decisions and programs, while our new Board of Directors and energetic Executive Committee are also exploring fresh ideas, piloting new fundraising tactics, and having fun getting to know each other. We look forward to continuing success and welcome you to join us at adoption events and fundraisers to learn more about SSDRās latest initiatives and ways you can get involved!
