Our Artistic Vision

The Prairie Roots Ensemble’s (PRE) vision is to foster a high level, inclusive, and creative musical environment within Saskatoon and the surrounding areas for performers, composers and content creators. Of equal importance is to showcase original, inclusive and creative music that highlights both the diversity and unity within Saskatoon and the surrounding area. The members of PRE all have the values of inclusivity and diversity as well as priding ourselves on a high level of artistry. We have built our concert ideas on those shared principles. We hope to grow as composers, arrangers, music educators and community leaders through striving to live up to our artistic vision. PRE also wants to foster true involvement by all parts of our community through our artistic and community collaborations.

The music PRE creates is jazz influenced, but due to the nature of the collaboration between all art forms we focus on, our sound is continuously changing and adapting. Having all studied at the University of Saskatchewan, our formal backgrounds in music are classical and jazz based. Being involved in the Saskatoon Music community, however, our informal backgrounds cause folk, R&B, rock, pop, latin, ska-punk and many more genres to influence our music. When we create our concerts, we take our own influences and the influences of our collaborators, and create a sound that pays homage to all of our backgrounds while being true to ourselves as individual artists.

We hope you all enjoy the events we create and are always happy to hear about ways we can adapt and change to best serve our community. Feel free to give us any suggestions or ideas of potential events you would like to see and we will do our best to make them happen.

Cheers,
