Saskatoon Karen-K’nyaw Community

Saskatoon Karen-K’nyaw Community The Karen are an indigenous group from the southeastern region of Burma (formerly Myanmar) near the Thai border.

They have been victims of ethnic cleansing for more than 50 years. In 2008 many Karen came to Saskatoon from Thai refugees camp. The parents and older Karen had already been displaced once when they fled from the army burning down their villages to the refugee camps along the border of Thailand. Many younger Karen were born and raised in the camps. Until coming to Saskatoon, this was the only lif

e they knew. Since arriving in Saskatoon the Karen have formed a small volunteer group. The purpose for this page is to help the Karen community stay connected with other Karen people locally and globally. We also hope to stay connected to the Saskatoon community and share information here about what is going on outside the Karen community. We hope to provide information and resources about and for the Karen and residents of Saskatoon. One of the main goals is to maintain the practice of our Karen language, culture, and tradition and share that with everyone in Saskatoon. For more information please direct messages to our page and our volunteer members will gladly respond to you.

Congratulations to Saw TaMla k’Paw and Saw Plo Soe on their 2026 leadership awards. These young leaders, who serve as volunteers and board members, have significantly impacted our community. We thank them for bridging the Karen community and broader society. Despite their youth, they shoulder great responsibility and understand its importance. For over four years, they've worked tirelessly alongside Karen leaders to uplift Saskatoon's Karen community. We are lucky to have young, inspiring leaders in our community.
