In this session, we will explore Two-Eyed Seeing with Nēhiyaw Knowledge Keeper Marilyn Dykstra. Marilyn is a proud member of Cumberland House Cree Nation through her mother, and also carries Scottish ancestry through her father. Born and raised in Treaty 5 Territory, Marilyn’s deep connection to her Cree heritage, community, and the land has profoundly shaped her life and teachings. Through her work and teachings, she helps preserve knowledge from one generation to the next, fostering greater respect, understanding, and connection to culture, community, and the land.
Marilyn follows a matriarchal system grounded in equity, balance, and respect for all people. She is a pipe carrier and facilitates Full Moon and New Moon teachings, creating opportunities for reflection, learning, ceremony, and connection. She also leads and facilitates sweat lodges, sharing traditional practices in a way that honours the teachings, the land, and those who participate.
Through her teachings and community work, Marilyn continues to uphold and carry forward the knowledge, values, and traditions entrusted to her while creating space for others to learn, connect, and deepen their understanding of Indigenous culture and ways of knowing. Currently, Marilyn serves as a Knowledge Keeper in residence with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.
