News from the field: We’ve had a very successful month tackling downy brome (Bromus tectorum)!

Our crew has been working on a property near Maple Creek, along with a volunteer event earlier this month. Across two properties, we cleared 125 bags of this invasive grass from 6 acres.

A big thank you to everyone who volunteered. Typically, it takes about four days to clear two areas on this Rare Plants and Ranchers property, but after four years of consistent removal, only one spot had regrowth this year. This allowed volunteers to complete the work in just one day. This kind of progress highlights the impact of long-term, ongoing management.

June 14–20 is Native Prairie Appreciation Week, a time to celebrate the beauty and importance of our native prairies 🌾

Native Prairie Appreciation Week raises awareness of prairie ecosystems and their vital role in Saskatchewan’s environment, agriculture, and communities. It’s an opportunity for residents, especially ranchers, naturalists, hunters, educators, and resource professionals, to recognize and celebrate the many values of native prairie. Notably, it’s the only week in North America dedicated to native grasslands!

News from the field: While the weather had other plans for our first day of downy brome removal last week, we switched gears and tackled some rare plant surveys instead with our dedicated volunteer!

We mapped Botrychium campestre (S3) and Astragalus kentrophyta (S2) on one of our Rare Plants and Ranchers properties. All told, we found 226 Botrychium plants and 9 Astragalus kentrophyta plants, making it a pretty great day despite the change of plans!

It is PlayCleanGo Awareness Week! Play Clean Go is a campaign that focuses on stopping the spread of invasive species. One way to do that by creating cleaning stations on trails including:

✔ Boundary Bog, Spruce River Highlands, Waskesiu River, Mud Creek, Red Deer Red across from the Visitor Center, Valleyview

Here are some tips to stop species in your tracks:
✔ Remove all plants , and mud from your boots, gear, pets and vehicles. 🌱🥾
✔ Clean all your gear before entering and leaving the trails. 🎒
✔ Stay on designated roads and trails to stop the spread and keep you safe. 🛣️

For more information on how to stop the spread of invasive species please visit the PlayCleanGo website: https://playcleango.org/
