About the artist:
A mixed mutt settler who's lived across much of Canada, Cale Passmore (they/him/any) struggled to connect to land and place and never expected to find that relationship through clay and craft. Committed uncle, grassroots activist, and lifelong knowledge worker, Cale has spent 7 years building a relationship with clay. From pottery to handbuilding, sculpture to abstract works, and learning how to work with clay respectfully and sustainably, Cale understands pottery as a relationship: with land, climate, with cultures, with one another. From instructor and board member in clay studios in Treaty 6 to residencies in Malaysia and Belgium, Cale is passionate about learning with those around him. There's something magical and traditional about pottery as a bridge between what you serve meals off and personal expressions that can last millennia. It's play, it's silly, and it's impacts are felt long after we return to the Earth. This is why Cale feels clay is a perfect medium to connect people with practices, places, histories, and their bodies.

ABOUT BERNADINE
As a young girl I spent many days at my Grandmother’s house where I watched her sitting at the kitchen table, cutting and piecing together fabric to make Star Blankets. Years later when I was an adult with kids of my own, my daughter asked me to make her a Jingle Dress so she could dance Pow Wow. I did not know how to make Regalia but after sitting with my memories of my Grandma, I was motivated to scour the internet for lessons on how to cut, sew, hem and piece together not just one dress but three jingle dresses for my three daughters. I have gone on to make patchwork pillows, totes and Star Blankets as well as design my own unique “Brave Girl Quilts” which are patchwork quilts of Women Pow Wow Dancers in the Jingle, Fancy and Traditional styles. I have been sharing these teachings with my daughters and I would love to share the art of Cultural Sewing with you as well.
