This past week, nuSarnia continued advocating for zoning improvements that better support housing affordability, intensification, walkability, and long-term community growth in Sarnia.

As part of the ongoing Zoning By-law discussions, we asked Council to support a motion directing staff to further review and reduce barriers that may be limiting:
โžก๏ธ Missing middle housing like duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes๏ฟฝ
โžก๏ธ As-of-right intensification and gentle density
โžก๏ธ Flexible neighbourhood-scale mixed-use and small business growth
โžก๏ธ More practical parking requirements
โžก๏ธ Housing affordability and housing supply overall

These conversations may sound technical, but zoning rules shape how our city grows and directly impact housing choices, infrastructure costs, local businesses, transportation options, and the overall vibrancy of our neighbourhoods.

We were encouraged to see Council acknowledge the importance of continuing this work, and the motion passed directing staff to report back with recommendations and implementation options for further consideration.

We appreciate the members of Council who helped move this conversation forward, along with the many residents and community advocates who continue pushing for a more connected, resilient, and people-focused Sarnia.

Weโ€™ll continue following the process closely and advocating for practical changes that help align our zoning framework with the goals already outlined in Sarniaโ€™s Official Plan.

Something new is coming to the lifeguard station at Canatara Park this Spring. ๐ŸŒ…

Over the next few weeks, the nuSarnia team and community partners will begin installing a new community-selected mural at the Canatara Park lifeguard station. This mural is a completely citizen-led and community-funded project organized by nuSarnia through local fundraising, sponsorships, and community support. No taxpayer dollars are being used for the mural installation.

The project came from a simple idea: if there are public spaces in our community that need some care and attention, we do not always have to wait years for change to begin. Sometimes meaningful improvements can start with residents, artists, volunteers, and local organizations coming together to work with what is already there and make it better.

The reality is that the lifeguard station is a building that has seen years of wear and tear, and we saw an opportunity to help bring some new life, colour, and energy into the space while celebrating one of the most loved waterfront destinations in our city.
This project is about more than art on a wall. It is about creating a more welcoming public space, supporting local artists, encouraging community pride, and continuing to show how small, community-led projects can positively shape the places we share.

Murals have the ability to spark conversation, create memorable landmarks, and make public spaces feel more vibrant and cared for. Through grassroots action and community collaboration, we are excited to help transform an overlooked space into something that reflects creativity, local identity, and civic pride.

A huge thank you to the many local businesses, organizations, and supporters who helped make this project possible. This is what community-led city building looks like.

Stay tuned as installation begins. ๐ŸŽจ

Weโ€™d like the opportunity to clear up some misinformation circulating about the mural project at Canatara Park.

This mural project is entirely community-led and community-funded through nuSarnia. The City of Sarnia did not contribute funding toward the mural installation.

Back in 2025, nuSarnia approached the City requesting permission to help beautify the lifeguard station because we agreed the building and surrounding space needed attention. Rather than waiting years for action, local residents, organizations, businesses, and funders stepped up to make something positive happen.

This project has been supported by community partners including the Judith & Norman Alix Foundation, Dulux Paints, Four Points Sheraton, local carpenters, volunteers, and many individual community supporters who believe public spaces in Sarnia deserve care and investment.

We would prefer to see long-term investment in public infrastructure too. But while larger plans continue to sit on shelves, community groups are still showing up to improve spaces however we can. Ironically, the only major public spending tied to this site in recent years has been consultant studies and master planning work that Council itself has never moved forward with implementing.

At the end of the day, this project is a reflection of what can happen when residents decide to invest their own time, energy, creativity, and resources back into the community. Through citizen-led efforts, we are adding beauty, civic pride, and positive community energy into a neglected public space without costing taxpayers anything.

We are incredibly grateful to every artist, volunteer, donor, business, and supporter who helped make this happen.
