Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society

Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society We're all downstream.
~ Ecologist's motto SWSS has been the backbone for environmental conservation in the Salmo River Watershed since 1997.

Members have taken an active interest in preserving and enhancing local and regional waterways by forming collaborative partnerships. We promote awareness of threatened fish and wildlife in our watershed and in the Canadian Columbia Basin. We produce scientific studies, monitor our water resources, are involved in wetland and river habitat restoration, offer employment opportunities for youth and

others, provide education and resources to the public, and are advocates for the environment and natural systems conservation.

With fishing season underway in the Salmo Watershed we would like to remind anglers that Bull Trout are catch and release throughout the Watershed. The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society have been monitoring water temperatures in the Salmo River mainstem for several years. This data has been used by the Minstry of Environment to enact partial fishery closures when water temperatures reach levels that cause stress to our native sport fish. While there are no specific regulations around angling and water temperature, here is a "thermometer " as a guideline.

🐢 With the recent warming in temperatures, turtle nesting season is in full swing! The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society has partnered with the Okanagan Nation Alliance on a project aimed at conserving this beautiful species. The goal of this project is to develop solutions to address threats (such as road mortalities) to turtle survival rates. We are currently placing temporary flagging at Erie Lake (which will be removed in early July). Please travel with caution on the tracks at Erie and give the turtles a wide berth. Keep a close eye (or ideally a leash) on your pets to prevent the disturbance of nests 🐢

This past fall, the Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society (SWSS) collaborated with the Sinixt Confederacy to conduct Bull Trout redd (spawning nest) surveys throughout the Salmo River watershed. Our organization has been monitoring Bull Trout spawners almost yearly since 1998. There was a sharp decline in numbers from 2005-2013 and the viability of Bull Trout survival was in question during this time. We are pleased to announce that those numbers have rebounded and appear to have stabilized in recent years!

Bull Trout are a blue-listed species in BC, meaning they're of special concern due to threats such as habitat loss and degradation, warming water temperatures and angling pressure. These threats are still present and may in fact be increasing. You can all help protect this fish species (and others), by practicing safe fish handling techniques, not fishing in the heat of the summer (when water temperatures are higher) and avoid intentionally targeting Bull Trout.

We wish to thank the for their financial support for this project in 2024 and previous years!

The South Selkirk mountain caribou herd was declared functionally extinct in 2018 despite conservation efforts. BC has lost 8 of the 18 deep snow herds in the past two decades and the remaining herds across the province are in decline and facing the same threats. Please take a moment to read and sign this petition calling on governments to meet their conservation obligations to protect this species at risk.

With the recent announcement of Whirling Disease being discovered in Kootenay Lake, The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society would like to stress the importance of "Clean, Drain, Dry". When moving between waterbodies please clean all gear, drain any water from boots, boats, etc. and dry your equipment. Whirling disease is a parasite the affects salmonids (Salmon, trout and char) and can have devastating effects on these fish and the ecosystems they inhabit.

Three trout samples taken from the southern arm of Kootenay Lake have tested positive for the parasite that causes whirling disease in juvenile fish.
