Today, volunteers with The Nameless and peer support workers from STASH, walked alongside other partners in our community

Put together by Social Services, we walked for World Homeless Day 2026. Alongside members of St. Thomas Police, CMHA, Social Services, The YWCA, Inn out of The Cold, Indwell, OPP and others - we took the time to reflect on homelessness in St Thomas. We were able to see how far we come and reflect on wins, while also taking time to recognize how far we still have to go.

For some, in our STASH group, it’s a personal injury of perseverance, strength and hope in a world of despair, trauma and loss. Recognizing where they’ve been and how far they’ve come, but also being cognizant of friends and loved ones still out there struggling.

From the lost lives monument to elevated park and back - we were able to be thankful. But also recognize that we need to continue to progress and move forward, and not leave anyone behind.

As another season of Nameless softball 🥎 comes to an end - I’m taking the time to reflect

It was a hard year. We had a couple wins. We had many losses. We at times struggled to come together. Street beefs sometimes found their way to the diamond. It wasn’t perfect but either are we.

What came from it was still so much positive. Bonds and friendships made with other teams. Acceptance and understanding, patience and love, support all around. Personal growth, physical growth. Confidence. Determination. Care. Compassion.

Our biggest win came from a team called The Benchwarmers.

We’ve had a healthy relationship with the fun loving Benchwarmers. Many taking the time to hear our story. Each game we got closer to catching them but we just couldn’t. Even our very last game of the season was a loss to The Benchwarmers (13-12 😞 ) but I wanted to share what why I wasn’t sad after this loss.

It started Friday night. After an issue on our own bench in our first game left us shorthanded - we entered our second game right afterwards feeling low. We tried to pull together as a team but trailed horribly. Then an unexpected injury to one of our girls took her down - hard. The benchwarmers were there. Both teams together - supporting and being there for one another. Compassion. Acceptance. Love. A round of applause as our girl went to hospital via ambulance. We were then too short players to play but not for the benchwarmers. One of their girls volunteered to play with us so we could see the game through. We took the field and played to the end. During the customary handshake 🤝 and “good games” at the end of the game, we were instead met with hugs. Words of encouragement. And support.

By our last game, our team was small but mighty. We were finally coming together. In our groove. That last game we again met the benchwarmers. One of us would be eliminated after. Both teams played our hearts out. When we lost 13-12, it didn’t feel like a massive loss. It felt like a win. We gave it our all and gave us the chance to cheer on our new friends in their next game.

The Benchwarmers, empire, c and c teams were incredible to us throughout the season. They took the time to show us new skills, to build relationships, get to know our folks as people.

While our team may look different next year with some moving onto different teams or to different places, I still feel the excitement. We truly hope to see more of our friends taking the field with us. Being part of something special.

The opposite of addiction is connection.
