๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒˆ As Disability Awareness Week comes to an end, we want to sincerely thank our incredible community for taking the time to learn, listen, support and engage throughout the week. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’™

Over the past several days, we highlighted a variety of different abilities and conditions to help spread awareness, understanding, inclusion and acceptance. While we were able to spotlight a number of different abilities, itโ€™s important to remember that there are hundreds of different abilities and every individualโ€™s experience is unique. โœจ

Awareness starts with education. The more we learn, ask questions and listen, the more inclusive and supportive our communities can become. If you ever have questions about different abilities, accessibility or inclusion, donโ€™t be afraid to respectfully ask and continue learning. Open conversations help break stigma and build understanding. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Together, we can continue creating a future where everyone feels valued, respected, supported and included โ€” not just during Disability Awareness Week, but every single day.

Thank you for being part of the conversation and helping us work toward a more inclusive community for all. ๐Ÿ’œ

Different, not less. Inclusion, not exclusion.

๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒˆ DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK - SCHIZOPHRENIA๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’œ

Throughout Disability Awareness Week, we are continuing to spotlight different disabilities and mental health conditions to help spread awareness, understanding, inclusion and acceptance throughout our community. โœจ

Today, we are highlighting Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a mental health condition that can affect the way a person thinks, feels, behaves and experiences the world around them. Symptoms and experiences can vary greatly from person to person and may change over time. ๐Ÿ’œ

Many people living with schizophrenia face stigma and misunderstanding, but schizophrenia does not define a person. With support, understanding, treatment and inclusion, individuals living with schizophrenia can lead meaningful, successful and fulfilling lives.

One of the most important things we can do as a community is listen without judgment, educate ourselves and show compassion. Small acts of kindness, inclusion and support can make a meaningful difference in someoneโ€™s life. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Letโ€™s continue working together to break stigma and create communities where everyone feels valued, respected and supported.

Different, not less. Inclusion, not exclusion. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒˆ DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK - PARALYSIS ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’™

Throughout Disability Awareness Week, we are continuing to spotlight different disabilities and conditions to help spread awareness, understanding, inclusion and acceptance throughout our community. โœจ

Today, we are highlighting Paralysis.

Paralysis is the loss of muscle function in part or most of the body and can affect movement, feeling and other body functions. It can happen suddenly or develop over time due to illness, injury or medical conditions. Every person living with paralysis has their own unique experiences, strengths and goals. ๐Ÿ’™

People living with paralysis can lead full, active and meaningful lives with the right supports, accessibility, inclusion and opportunities. Assistive devices, adaptive technology and inclusive communities help promote independence and participation in everyday life.

One of the best ways we can support individuals living with paralysis is by creating accessible environments, using respectful language and focusing on abilities rather than limitations. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Different, not less. Inclusion, not exclusion. ๐Ÿ’œ

A HUGE Thank-You to the St. Stephen-Milltown Lionettes!!! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Yesterday the St. Stephen - Milltown Lionettes went to the St. Croix Vocational Centre on Union Street to present a cheque to the Centre. They are raising funds for a new Van. We presented a cheque for $500.00 and we hope that they can raise enough funds this year.

This is a great not-for-profit agency in St. Stephen. They have the Thrift Store (which is located behind the Scotiabank), and Printed with Love (which is located at their Union Street location). In fact, the Lionettes have had new t-shirts, golf shirts and sweatshirts purchased and printed by Printed with Love. The power of purple. They also do many other items so check them out. The SCVC also have a team of people who do lawn care and snow removal.

As you can see we had a great time there and they were all so appreciative of our visit and donation.

๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒˆ DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK - SENSORY DISABILITIES๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’™

Throughout Disability Awareness Week, we are continuing to spotlight different disabilities and conditions to help spread awareness, understanding, inclusion and acceptance throughout our community. โœจ

Today, we are highlighting Sensory Disabilities.

Sensory disabilities can affect the way a person experiences and responds to the world around them. They may impact one or more senses, including sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, balance or sensory processing. Every individual experiences sensory disabilities differently, and every experience is valid. ๐Ÿ’™

Some individuals may need quieter environments, extra processing time, assistive devices, sensory breaks or different ways of communicating and learning. Small acts of patience, understanding and support can make a meaningful difference in helping people feel comfortable, included and valued.

By learning more and creating inclusive spaces, we help build communities where everyone feels respected, supported and able to thrive. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Different, not less. Inclusion, not exclusion. ๐Ÿ’œ

Today, we are highlighting Epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the brain and can cause recurring seizures. Seizures can look different for every person and may include staring spells, confusion, unusual sensations, muscle movements or loss of awareness. ๐Ÿ’œ

Epilepsy is more common than many people realize, and with the right support, understanding and treatment, individuals living with epilepsy can live full, active and meaningful lives.

Learning about seizure safety and reducing stigma can make a huge difference in helping people with epilepsy feel safe, respected and included. Kindness, patience and awareness matter. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Throughout Disability Awareness Week, we are continuing to spotlight different disabilities and conditions to help spread awareness, understanding, inclusion and acceptance throughout our community. โœจ

Today, we are highlighting Intellectual Disability.

An intellectual disability can affect learning, communication, problem solving, social skills and daily living skills. Every person with an intellectual disability is unique, with their own strengths, interests, talents and goals. ๐Ÿ’™

People with intellectual disabilities can learn, grow, work, build meaningful relationships and make important contributions to their communities when given the opportunity, support and inclusion they deserve.

By creating welcoming and inclusive schools, workplaces and communities, we help ensure everyone feels respected, valued and supported for who they are. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Letโ€™s continue to focus on abilities, not limitations, and celebrate the value every person brings to our world.

Different, not less. Inclusion, not exclusion. ๐Ÿ’œ

Throughout Disability Awareness Week, we are continuing to spotlight different disabilities and mental health conditions to help spread awareness, understanding, acceptance and inclusion within our community. โœจ

Anxiety disorders are real mental health conditions that can affect people of all ages. They can cause intense worry, fear, nervousness and physical symptoms that may interfere with everyday life. ๐Ÿ’™

While everyone experiences anxiety differently, one thing remains the same โ€” kindness, patience and understanding can make a huge difference. Anxiety is not a sign of weakness, and with the right support, treatment and understanding, individuals living with anxiety can manage their symptoms and live full, meaningful lives.

Letโ€™s continue working together to reduce stigma and create supportive, inclusive communities where everyone feels safe, valued and heard. ๐Ÿ’ซ
