We are often asked about the backstory of some of the animals here, so we are putting together kind of series of images/stories we are calling 'Then and Now', beginning with Suzie.
Suzie, the large cow who lives and plays in the barnyard with her sheep, goat and other friends was rescued from a satanic cult south of Hawkesbury, Ontario. She is a 'freemartin', a female cow who absorbed a lot of testosterone while sharing the womb with a male brother.
The cult bought her twin brother and sacrificed him while just days old, and Suzie was thrown in for free because she is not fertile and could not produce milk. The cult left her tied to a tree in the woods at two days old, by a length of string around her neck, no water, no food. A neighbour took to sneaking water and feed to her, and called us. Karyn and I were able to get to her and bring her to the farm where she now is fully grown.
She chooses every day whether she wants to go into the pasture with the other cows, or to stay with her sheep and goat buddies in the barnyard (which is usually what she chooses when I ask her "Do you want to be a cow today", if she wants to join the cows for the day, she answers by going to the cow pasture gate). She sleeps nights in a stall in the barn just as she has done since that first day when we carried her there.
