Dickie Crossman Memorial Foundation

Dickie Crossman Memorial Foundation This Foundation was set up in memory of Dickie who we lost to cancer on July 16, 2002 at the age of 35. The first tournament was held with roughly 12 teams.

How the Dickie Crossman Memorial Foundation came to be:

The day of Dickie’s funeral (in 2002) conflicted with the O’Leary’s annual golf tournament. However, in the end the conflict was resolved as the tournament was cancelled. All of O’Leary’s staff and patrons, all of which knew and loved Dickie attended the funeral. Needless to say we would’ve made Dickie proud with the good “ole Irish Wake” we

held afterwards in his honour. We all knew he would’ve been the first one there if he could’ve been as O’Leary’s was where you could find Dickie on most Fridays! Later that fall, the O’Leary’s staff and friends decided to hold the annual golf tournament and the idea was brought forward that any money left over would be put towards something in Dickie’s good name. By the time it was all said and done, we raised just over $300. The following year the tournament grew with close to 20 teams participating. In the 3rd year, with the number of teams still growing we had to find an organization to align with and put our money to good use. We heard about Positive Recreation Opportunities for Kids (P.R.O. Kids) a local non-profit organization that sponsors underprivileged children in our community and helps them participate in activities such as; organized sports, music, art lessons, dance etc. We knew this would be exactly what Dickie would want. We’re pleased to say we’ve risen over $300,000.00 from Dickie’s tournaments. This makes us a Premier Smile Sponsor for P.R.O. Kids - One of their highest ranking contributors!! In 2009, we created the DCM logo. In 2010, we launched the Dickie Crossman Website. As for the tournament itself, it’s still growing with new sponsors and teams jumping on board every year. (The past several years have been completely sold-out!)
With the help of our sponsors and participants we plan on continuing to raise funds in Dickie’s honour for this worthy cause.

Holy Smokes, it’s hard to believe that Dickie would be turning 59 today. Instead, 23 years ago he turned our world upside down and left a hole in all of our hearts when he left us way to early .

It’s equally hard to believe where Dickie’s passing lead us, from a missed gathering of O’Leary’s patrons on a golf to course, to one of the most recognized and successful golf tournaments in Saint John. Whether it was karma, luck or something else, the canceled golf tournament provided us an idea, and we ran with it. From the early start of 10-15 teams raising a few hundred dollars, to hitting a milestone this year of over $500K, to say we are humbled and honored is under statement!!

However the 2nd Saturday of every July isn’t just about golf, it’s the one day we get to mend our broken hearts, it’s day that we come together, to remember, tell story’s and most importantly laugh and remember Dickie for who he was. For those that didn’t know him, Dickie was a “legit” nice guy, whose smile and sincerity came out as soon as you met him, his good sense of humor and contagious laughter would always lighten up the room. He was a guys guy, who was a true gentleman!!

This annual Golf tournament embodies who Dickie was. Dickie enjoyed great times, great friends, a few pops, lots of laughter and above all, helping people. Whether he was working at the hospital or volunteering by coaching, he was known as kind hearted guy would give you his shirt off his back,. This tournament is about everything Dickie loved and I know he and big Pete are up in heaven smiling down on us every year!!

We like to take this time to thank all the golfers, volunteers and most importantly all the sponsors who continue to trust and support our annual event, without you all we wouldn’t be able to do it, THANK YOU!!

And to Dickie, “Happy Birthday Brother”,, we miss and Love you, and thank you continuing to lead the way!!
