Human Development Council

Human Development Council As a social planning council, the Human Development Council (HDC) identifies and addresses social issues through research, coordination, and networking.
(1)

The Human Development Council is unique to the province of New Brunswick. It grew from a coordinated effort by the former Social Services Council, United Way of Greater Saint John, City of Saint John, Province of New Brunswick, and the federal government who funded a year long study in 1976, called the Human Development Project. Its purpose was to produce a framework for the planning and delivery

of human services. Community participation was essential as was a spirit of partnership and collective responsibility.

The 𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 (2026) report from the NB Coalition for Pay Equity is a powerful reminder that the community nonprofit sector is carrying essential work under increasingly strained conditions.

Workers are highly skilled and deeply committed, yet continue to face low wages, unstable funding, limited benefits, and ongoing burnout.

If we value community wellbeing in New Brunswick, we need to value the people who deliver it, through stable funding, fair compensation, and decent working conditions.
