I had a good chat with Pie and Hazel at the North End Food Bank Association about being depressed after hitting my $10 000 goal. Everyone has told me I should be proud of the accomplishment, and I'm not belittling the achievement or fishing for compliments here. The stark reality, however, is that these fine folks distribute an estimated $90 000 in supplies PER MONTH, with roughly $35 000 purchased with funding streams and the rest provided by donations, and that's at ONE location. Considering there's at least another dozen groups and associations delivering food and supplies to vulnerable people, it leaves me wondering about the staggering amount of money needed to feed people, not just in Saint John but in New Brunswick and across Canada, as well.
According to Food Banks Canada, over TWO MILLION Canadians visit a food bank every month, including roughly 700 000 children. Meanwhile, Galen Weston's total compensation in 2022 was over ELEVEN MILLION DOLLARS.
