In our last post about weirs, we looked at how the stakes that form the skeleton of a weir are driven into the seafloor. While the stakes create the shape of the weir, it's the twine that requires some of the most time and effort to prepare.

One of the most time-consuming parts of building a weir is preparing, repairing, and installing the nets, or “twine,” that are attached to the stakes. In fact, a weir isn't considered active until the twine is tied on.

Today, most weir twine is made from nylon or other synthetic materials. Years ago, fishermen used cotton twine and dipped it in tar to help prevent rot and extend its lifespan. While the materials have changed, the work of preparing and repairing thousands of feet of twine remains much the same.

The twine is installed in two sections. The bottom twine runs from around the low-water line down to the seafloor, while the top twine is attached above it to provide the extra height needed to handle the tides. Around here, that's no small challenge, as local tides can rise and fall by 20–25 feet every six hours.

The bottom twine is often made from heavier material because it remains mostly underwater and isn't exposed to the same wind and waves. It is secured at three points on every stake: near the seafloor by a diver, partway up the stake, and near the low-water line by a fisherman working from a small boat called a skiff.

This work has to be carefully timed around low tide. Fishermen and divers often have a window of only about 2.5 hours to reach the low-water sections of the stakes and secure the top of the bottom twine before the rising tide lifts them out of the area where they need to work.

Once the bottom twine is in place, the top twine is tied on and attached to the top poles, creating the full height of the weir. Because storms can put tremendous strain on the structure, fishermen will sometimes remove the top twine before periods of high winds and rough seas to help prevent damage.

It might not sound too daunting (other than needing a diver and working around the tides) but consider the scale of the job. The bottom twine alone can be anywhere from 500 to 1,500 feet long (150–450 metres) to wrap around a single weir.

And the work doesn't end when the fishing season is over. At the end of the summer or fall, the twine is removed and stored. Rather than replacing it each year, fishermen often repair and reuse it. First, it is stretched out to dry. Then vegetation is removed, and thousands of feet of netting are inspected for tears and worn sections.

For many fishermen, that work continues through the winter in sheds and garages so the twine is ready when weir-building season returns in the spring. Some twine used in sheltered areas may be 20 years old and still in service, while other weirs may need new twine after only a single season if they have weathered a particularly severe storm.
