Congratulations to Tim Johnson, President of the Niagara Academy for Indigenous Relations, who will be honoured by Brock University with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws at Spring Convocation.

Tim has dedicated more than 45 years to sharing Indigenous history, culture, knowledge, and truth across Niagara, Canada, and North America. His work has helped deepen public understanding of Indigenous contributions to history, arts, science, heritage, and contemporary culture.

From his leadership with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, to his work with the Woodland Cultural Centre, Sho’aríshon Park in Lincoln, the Great Niagara Escarpment Indigenous Cultural Map, Landscape of Nations, and the Niagara Academy for Indigenous Relations, Tim’s impact has been extraordinary.

This recognition is especially meaningful given Tim’s deep family connection to this region, including his seventh great-grandfather Joseph Brant and John Brant, whose legacy is connected to Queenston Heights and Brock’s Indigenous Healing Garden.

Congratulations, Tim, on this well-deserved honour. Thank you for your leadership, your commitment to education, and your ongoing work to ensure Indigenous stories, histories, and voices are recognized, respected, and shared.

Tim will receive the honour and deliver the Convocation address on Thursday, June 11 at Brock University’s 10 a.m. ceremony.

Geosite Spotlight: Louth Conservation Area 🌿💧

Tucked along Sixteen Mile Creek in Lincoln, Louth protects a beautiful stretch of the Niagara Escarpment—with access to the Bruce Trail and a winding route through escarpment forest alive with the songs of unique forest birds.

As you explore the creek valley, keep an eye out for historic rock formations and take in the stunning scenery along the trail—including two magnificent waterfalls you can see (and hear) along the way.

A perfect spot for passive day use—slow down, look closer, and let the landscape do the storytelling.

Sunday Field Note: Try the “one-minute geologist” challenge. ⏱️

Wherever you explore today—Louth, Woodend, a shoreline, or your local trail—pause for one minute and notice:
• one texture (rock, bark, soil)
• one pattern (layers, ripples, cracks)
• one sign of water (flow, pooling, erosion)

That’s how Niagara’s story starts to come into focus—one small observation at a time.

Did you know? Parts of Niagara were once covered by warm, shallow seas—long before vineyards, villages, or road maps.

That’s why marine fossils and ancient layers are part of the rock record here. Every walk is a chance to spot a piece of deep history—sometimes in the most unexpected places.

Biological Diversity Day (May 22) reminds us that biodiversity isn’t “somewhere else”—it’s here in Niagara’s forests, wetlands, shorelines, and backyards.

When we protect habitats and explore with care, we help keep Niagara’s living landscapes thriving.

World Bee🐝 Day (May 20) is a reminder that tiny creatures do huge work.

As you explore Niagara this week, look for pollinator moments—blossoms buzzing🌼, gardens waking up, meadow edges coming alive. Healthy ecosystems are part of what makes a region resilient and beautiful.

Happy International Museum Day (May 18)!

Museums help Niagara’s stories stay visible—holding the objects, images, voices, and memories that connect people to place. We’re grateful to work alongside museum partners across the region who help residents and visitors go beyond the surface—from natural history to community heritage, from untold stories to shared understanding.

Thank you for helping Niagara’s layers—land, people, history, and future—stay connected and accessible.
