Municipal politics doesn't always get the attention it deserves. But the decisions made by local governments have a major impact on our everyday lives.
At yesterday's NEXTNiagara Social, we discussed why the October 26 municipal election matters to young professionals across Niagara.
Three issues stood out: affordability, infrastructure and economic opportunity. From the cost of housing and public transit to the availability of good jobs, municipal decisions help determine whether Niagara is a place where young people can build their careers and futures.
We also discussed the significant changes coming to Niagara Regional Council, including its reduction to 12 mayors and a provincially appointed Chair, and the proposed introduction of weighted voting.
Another focus was the Niagara Business Alliance's newly released Municipal Candidate Survey. With responses from 169 candidates across Niagara's 12 municipalities, the survey gives voters an opportunity to compare candidates' priorities and positions on the issues that matter to them.
The message was simple: get informed, get involved and vote. Municipal elections often have low turnout, which makes participation especially important.
