Today, we're proud to raise the flag for Wild Salmon Day. 🐟🌎

Alongside our partners at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, BC First Nations Fisheries Council, Atlantic Salmon Trust, and many other organizations and communities around the world, we're raising our voices for wild salmon and the rivers they depend on.

This year’s message is clear: wild salmon need healthy rivers.

Wild salmon support ecosystems, cultures, local economies, and countless other species. Yet salmon populations continue to decline across much of their range, making restoration and protection efforts more important than ever.

Join us in standing up for wild salmon and the rivers they call home. Together, we can help ensure these remarkable fish continue to return for generations to come.

Wild Salmon Day is tomorrow, June 1st. Raise the flag with us and make your voice heard. 🙌
🐟 🌎
Across the Pacific and Atlantic, organisations and communities are delivering this year’s Wild Salmon Day message: wild salmon need healthy rivers, now. It’s time to scale up global restoration efforts for the sake of salmon - and the ecosystems and communities that depend on them.
🚨
WHY IT MATTERS:
In 2025, the numbers for wild Atlantic salmon returning to the United Kingdom and Eastern North America were among the lowest in recorded history. Two thirds of Pacific salmon populations in B.C. and the Yukon are also in long-term decline, a trend mirrored across the Pacific Northwest. A global coalition of conservation organisations is sending a clear message: restoring salmon rivers can’t wait.

The spring migration of river herring is well underway in Maine’s rivers, marking one of nature’s great seasonal spectacles.

Millions of alewives and blueback herring are moving upstream this season, with more than 3.2 million already passing the Milford Dam on the Penobscot River. At monitoring sites in the Kennebec River and Sebasticook River, counts have surpassed 2.1 million fish.

These returns are a powerful reminder of the scale of river herring migrations and the importance of restoring access to historic spawning habitat, not just for Atlantic salmon, but for a wide range of other sea-run species.

ASF hosted a reception last night in Ottawa to recognize the Government of Canada’s $81.7 million investment in the national Atlantic salmon conservation strategy. MPs, Senators, hill staff, and DFO Minister Joanne Thompson joined ASF President Nathan Wilbur, ASF directors, and staff at the National Arts Centre.

Coupled with a $25 million contribution from ASF, Canada’s commitment is a generational opportunity to conserve and restore one of Canada’s most loved wildlife species.

Thanks to everyone for joining!
