Are new federal rules putting natural health practitioners’ compounding rights at risk?

In this clip from Highway to Health, Jason Dahl takes a closer look at Health Canada’s updated policy on natural health product compounding—and asks some uncomfortable questions about what it could mean for practitioners and their patients.

The policy sets out conditions around when compounding is considered acceptable, including requirements involving therapeutic need, product availability, customization, and the practitioner-patient relationship. Jason also highlights concerns that these conditions may go beyond what is actually found in the Natural Health Product Regulations.

The issue is particularly important for traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, herbalists, homeopaths, and naturopaths, who have long used compounding to prepare individualized products for patients.

Not every Canadian will choose traditional Chinese medicine, and that is perfectly fine. But healthcare freedom means recognizing that different people will make different choices. The question is not whether one approach is right for everyone. The question is whether Canadians should remain free to choose the approaches that are right for them.

Human beings have developed different ways of understanding health across cultures and throughout history. Traditional Chinese medicine is one of the world's great medical traditions, shaped by generations of observation, practice, and knowledge. We do not need to erase one tradition in order to appreciate another. A richer healthcare conversation begins when we are willing to listen.

In the August 13th newsletter, we put our first Newsletter Poll question to you. As you know, we’re building NHPPA TV, a new, secure platform to host our many past and future broadcasts.

We wanted to know what feature of NHPPA TV would be most important to you, since you will be the ones using it!

It turns out that "Reliable access even if censored" is the most important concern for almost half of you. It is for us as well.

With the governmennt only continuing to overreach with stifling natural health products regulations like the Self-Care Framework, combined with the recent rash of speech-dampening bills passed, organisations like ours need to harden our defences so that, no matter what, NHPPA content remains accessible.

As always, our content will be broadcast on our social platforms, but NHPPA will serve as a repository that cannot be censored or taken down by any agency.

We will continue to build NHPPA TV over the winter and will update you as we go. Thank you all for your support!
