Word from the Pastor

Last week we read about the Israelites creating a golden calf to worship while Moses was away talking with God. The calf was likely a way for the Israelites to relate to God in a more familiar way, but this idol could not represent God. It was lifeless, created by human hands, and unable to be in relationship. Our Triune God is relational, and He wants relationship with us. How precious our Creator is our sustainer and our friend, and desires communion with us. Unlike the gold calf that Israel formed, or our modern “golden calves” that try to fill the void, our hearts are created to commune with our creator. Let’s daily decide to worship our Lord and Saviour and NOT our modern “golden calves”.

This week we talk about “Gold” and a "cow”. Last week we explored God establishing a covenant with the people of Israel. After God gives the Ten Commandments, Moses is called up the mountain to receive instruction from God about building the tabernacle and instructions for worship. While Moses was on the mountain, Aaron and the people basically lose it and start worshipping and making offering to a golden calf. What happened? Why did they do this? Who’s at fault? We have modern day “golden calves” too, stay tuned for our sermon discussion as we unpack this bizarre story of Israel.

This week we continue our look at the Israelites on their journey through the wilderness out of enslavement in Egypt. They experienced tests that taught them more about this God who had delivered them from Egypt. God meets them at Mt. Sinai, a very special place in the storyline of Israel’s deliverance. God initiates the beginning of a special relationship with the people of Israel through an agreement called a covenant. He sends Moses with a message to the people. This covenant was important to Israel as it gave them the direction on how to walk with God. Fast-forward to today, our covenant is brand new and His name is Jesus, and with the help of the Holy Spirit we can come boldly to The Father’s throne as Jesus the High Priest makes us holy and able to have a new relationship, a New Covenant with God.

This week we continue our look at the Israelites exodus from Egypt. Last week, we talked about the bread, “manna” that God provided. This week, the wilderness journey continues. This time the problem isn’t hunger. It’s thirst. Once again, Israel finds itself in a place where there is no human solution. They begin to question whether God can really be trusted. As you can see these ancient passages of hunger and thirst are timeless. We, as humans, need to eat and drink daily. God was telling the Israelites they also need Him, and His provision daily! This week we get the great pleasure of a visit from Mike Rasmussen, GCI Superintendent for North America and the Caribbean. Join us for a meaningful and Spirit-led time of discernment and visioning as we seek to understand more fully who God has called us to be as the Bride of Christ. Together, we will reflect on the life and teachings of Jesus—observing how He lived, how He loved, and how He revealed the very heart of the Father as He walked among us. A 🍕 Pizza Lunch will follow morning services, after which the workshop will begin at 1:00 p.m.

This week’s theme is God makes himself known. The Old Testament reading from Exodus tells the story of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt involving a pillar of fire and cloud, a dividing of the Red Sea, and the destruction of an empire’s army. There were many “false gods” during Israel’s time. It’s often said gods that can’t hear, gods that can’t see, god’s that can’t talk. In my Bible Readings I like to call these gods “fake gods”. This is contrasted with our great God, the God that is “I AM”. And God did make himself known that He was and is The Great God. Jesus the son is that same God that did also make Himself known by coming incarnate to the world.

This week’s theme is God Saves. Specifically that He gives us a way to remember that He saves us. Our Old Testament reading from Exodus contains the instructions from the Lord to Moses on how to prepare and keep the Passover of the LORD, a day set apart as a day of remembrance of God saving Israel while executing judgement on Egypt. The “Pass Over” of the Death Angel that became the Passover Meal, that became the Lord’s Supper that became The Bread and W**e of Communion which points to The Wedding Supper of the Lamb. The more I read on “Passover” and the detailed customs and rituals of this special day, the more I understand the awe that is God saving and having an intimate relationship with creation, and all of us.

Word from the Pastor

This week’s theme is "God comes down." In Exodus, God calls Moses at the burning bush to risk himself in love by leading Israel out of oppression. In Romans, Paul describes a community whose genuine love overcomes evil with good even when it is costly. And in Matthew’s gospel, Jesus walks the way of the cross and calls His disciples to follow Him in self-denying, costly love. All the verses in this RCL theme talk about God coming down. And He must; there is no other way we can know Him unless He reveals Himself to us. What a privilege to be able to meet and know your maker!
