🧐Zebra mussels look very different from New Brunswick’s 10 native freshwater mussel species... and knowing how to tell the difference matters.

Zebra mussels

▪ Small (usually under 5 cm)

▪ Sharp, triangular shell

▪ Bold black-and-white stripes 🦓

▪ Flat bottom – they can stick tightly to rocks, pipes, and boats

Native New Brunswick mussels

▪ Larger and thicker shells

▪ Smooth, rounded, or oval shapes

▪ Solid colours like brown, green, or black

▪ Curved shells that sit loosely or submerged on river or lake bottoms

🤷Why does this matter?

Zebra mussels are invasive and can harm native mussels by attaching to their shells and competing for food.

On rainy days like today, we love reminiscing about our inspiring field season! 🌧
Living Lab New/Nouveau Brunswick will soon be harvesting corn from our two Living Lab sites, and we’re excited to learn more about how this year’s treatments affected crop yield. While they’re out harvesting, they’ll also be collecting fall soil samples.
There’s always something exciting happening at Living Lab New/Nouveau Brunswick, and we love hearing all about their projects during our bi-weekly meetings! 🌽💧
