Tomorrow, September 30th, is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It’s a time to remember the children who never returned home and to honour Survivors and their families. Reconciliation is rooted in the courage to listen, the humility to acknowledge past and ongoing harms, and an unwavering commitment to upholding the truth while confronting denialism in all forms.

We stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples today and every day, committing ourselves to the essential, ongoing work of truth-telling and meaningful reconciliation.

We invite you to join us in observing this important day by attending an event near you or by furthering your personal learning journey by watching, reading, or listening. Resources such as the Orange Shirt Society, the National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation, and local events listed through Culture Days offer opportunities to deepen understanding and participate meaningfully.

🚨 Petrel Season Has Begun! 🚨
Did you know Leach’s Storm-Petrels can get stranded on land, especially during strong winds? They can only flutter a short distance from the ground, so they may look injured, but they always need help! These tiny seabirds often tuck themselves along building foundations to stay safe from predators.

👉 If you spot one:
• Wear gloves to protect both you and the bird.
• Gently hold it with its wings against its body.
• Place it in a ventilated cardboard box lined with paper towel, and keep it somewhere cool and quiet (away from children and pets).
• Do not give the bird food or water.
• Call or text the CPAWS hotline at 709-330-8929 or send us a Facebook message for assistance. We will direct you on safe handling and to the nearest drop-off location.
• If you’re in a remote area, we can guide you on a safe release.
• After handling, dispose of gloves and wash your hands.

KWRC staff and summer students spent a portion of the field season kayaking and hiking through the watershed on the lookout for Bank Swallows and their habitats - here are the stats! This work is part of our Targeted Species at Risk Stewardship project funded by the NB Wildlife Trust Fund.

Next, the KWRC will be engaging landowners to implement beneficial management practices to help protect Bank Swallows and their homes 😊
