RITHET’S BOG CONSERVATION AREA
The Rithet’s Bog Conservation Area is situated on the southeast end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It is a Saanich municipal park and nature sanctuary located in Broadmead, just to the northeast of the Quadra / Pat Bay Highway overpass. The park encompasses an area of 38 hectares and has a 2.8 kilometer graveled walking trail. There are a wide variety of wetland habitats such as seasonal open water, mudflat, marsh, swamp, fen, wet meadow and bog-forest, as well as some upland Garry Oak meadow and Douglas Fir forest. Since Rithet’s Bog is zoned as a nature sanctuary, the primary purpose of this park is to provide a refuge for native plants and animals. Recreational use is oriented toward nature appreciation activities such as bird watching. Over 120 species of birds have been sighted at Rithet’s Bog, as well as 23 butterflies, 19 dragonflies and a wide variety of native plants. The spring and fall migration seasons are especially good times to view waterfowl in the wetland areas.
