Have you ever wondered where the source of Trail, Topping, Hanna and Murphy creeks originate from and the journey

they take to the Columbia River? Are you the type of person who loves to spend time near water and excite your senses with sounds and colours of flowing streams? If you are like many Canadians who regard water as the most precious resource then join up with the Rossland Streamkeepers and participate in a discovery of the creeks that support life in your home and playground. We are looking for volunteers and also for stories, facts and points of interest on our creeks.

Getting near the end of April and so far just a little blip of freshet in the Trail Creek compared to previous years. What does this mean for summer drought?

A water quality snapshot study of the stream chemistry from the Haley Creek watershed gulley in Warfield into the Trail Creek was performed in June 2025. Although eyes were on Haley Creek for water quality improvements over the Teck remediation years, it was a surprise to see the results from the Silver Street culvert stream. A comparison of elements cadmium and arsenic raised red flags. In summary, both cadmium and arsenic concentrations were above and beyond national water quality standards for aquatic life. The report was shared with the Warfield Council of the Whole and Teck Resources for their comments and suggestions.

Tis the season to review the discharge behaviour of Hanna and Topping Creeks. This hydrograph, compliments of Living Lakes Canada and Rory Gallaugher, indicates peak flows of Hanna and Topping Creeks from Oct 2023 to Oct 2025. Lower elevation Topping Creek has a little earlier freshet than Hanna. The City of Rossland draws water from these creeks for their water supply. Of particular interest this year are the very low discharge levels during the dry summer months.

The new Beaver Creek Watershed terrain model made its first public engagement with an audience at the Fruitvale Council Chambers. A very active discussion was had by RDKB Area A Director Ali Grieve, CFO Marcus Partridge, Councillor Wes Startup and Water Utility Supervisor Jeff Mason. The terrain model was fabricated at STAC and colour rendered by Bill Coedy of the Rossland Streamkeepers. The terrain model is a useful awareness tool in any discussion involving Beaver Creek Watershed water use, security, water monitoring, habitat protection and the development of recreational trails. The Rossland Streamkeepers acknowledges FortisBC, Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program and RDKB Area A Director Ali Grieve for their contributions and support of this project.
