Badlands Search and Rescue

Last nights training had 13 members and members in training hone in their mapping skills using various maps of the map, their compass and their noodle (aka brain) lol

Although with todays technology having us use GPS and various mapping apps it is always good to keep up on the old reliable way that doesn’t require any batteries or cell service.

Map and compass skills are what we refer to as a perishable skill, a skill that you can quickly forget if you don’t use it, therefore we practice it!

As volunteers we need to remind ourselves to take time to rejuvenate. As simple as getting away for a weekend camping with my pooch fills my bucket!

What did I do before I left for camping?

Simple….

I shared my trip plan with two responsible people. Not all adults are responsible so I made sure to pick two people that would make the call to the right people if I don’t return on time.
I packed the essentials. Food, water, map, rain gear, fire starter, battery pack to charge my phone in case I need to make an emergency call.
And I took the training to know how to use my gear. It doesn’t help you to have the gear if you don’t know how to use it.

That’s our very own Candace front and center! Congrats Candace on being part of the first place team this past weekend at SAR Games!

Training, hard work and determination got you there!

⭐️ What a fantastic weekend at SAR Alberta’s annual All Teams Weekend 2026!

Held September 26–27 in Calgary, this year's event brought together members from 29 of Alberta’s 33 search and rescue teams along with representatives from 11 partner agencies for a weekend of learning, collaboration and camaraderie.

Saturday was packed with valuable training sessions covering a wide range of search and rescue skills and techniques. On Sunday, the excitement continued with the much-anticipated SAR Games, where 16 mixed teams put their skills, teamwork and problem-solving abilities to the test at a series of challenging stations located around Calgary’s Elliston Lake.

Congratulations to our SAR Games winners! 🏆️

From left to right, the winning team included Evan Gamble, Rory Hoogsteen, Candace Wardner, Robert Wambold and Jagger Smyl-Joly.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated including our presenters, instructors, board members, partner agencies, staff team and event organizers for making the weekend such a success.

Bringing teams together to learn, share knowledge and build relationships strengthens Alberta’s search and rescue community and helps us be ready when our communities need us most.

Thank you to all our dedicated volunteers for everything you do!

We’re proud to share that five members of our BSAR team attended SAR All Teams 2026! It was a weekend full of opportunity to train, connect, share knowledge, and work alongside search and rescue teams from across Alberta.

We’re especially excited to celebrate that one of our team members was part of the winning team at the SAR Games! 🏆

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part, and thank you to the organizers and fellow SAR teams for an outstanding event.

We’re proud of our team and grateful for the opportunity to continue learning, growing, and serving our community. 💪

What an absolute beaut of a weekend! I can not express the amount of gratitude we have towards South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue Association for hosting another awesome weekend! The training scenarios provided were exactly what we can encounter on any one of our searches. Paul was top notch host with the most even though he won’t take credit for it (true SAR member credits the team behind him more than himself, however he was the “face” of the weekend) The cooks! WOW! Non stop food, and tasty!

We couldn’t do this without our community, our partnerships and our volunteers.

Thank you SEASAR for an amazing weekend!

❤️ Badlands Search And Rescue Member Appreciation Get-Together! ❤️

Today was all about celebrating the incredible people who make up Badlands Search And Rescue!

Our members give their time, energy, skills, and countless hours to help others when they need it most. Today, we get to hit pause on the radios, leave the gear at the door, and enjoy some good food, laughs, and great company.

To every member of our team: thank you for everything you do, for the calls you answer, the training you put in, and the support you give to your community. You truly make a difference. ❤️

Here’s to the team, the friendships, the memories, and hopefully a few stories that stay at the BBQ! 😂

BSAR — stronger together!

MEMBER APPRECIATION DAY.

Busy morning prepping and smoking. Up early to get the brisket on for our pot luck member appreciation today. Without volunteers we wouldn’t be able to do what we do! Thank you to each and everyone of our members who sacrifices time away from family and friends to help others when they need it.

If you’re interested in joining our team please reach out via Messenger and one of our volunteers will get back to you.
